Ambarawa. 1870, 10 cent brown on fresh envelope sent to Soerabaija; stamp lightly tied to envelope by the Ambarawa half-round franco cancel 22.10 1873 with an additional strike on the front and “franco” written below stamp; the postmark
appears to lack the “73” in the year. Letter sent to pharmacist A. Stendemann in Soerabaija and on back is a clear red Soerabaija 25.10 1873 arrival. Very fine and rare. The date 22.10 1873 is the latest known date for this postmark, and an
exceptionally late use of the half-round franco cancel.

Amboina. 1870, 10 cent brown and 50 cent red on attractive little envelope sent to Florence; stamps perfectly obliterated by centrally struck Amboina half-round franco cancel 5.12 1872 with an additional strike on the front. On back are
circular Ligne P Paq. Fr. No 1 5.1 1873 (Salles I.965) and Firenze 7.2 1873 arrival. Stamps and postmarks in immaculate condition, envelope roughly opened at top with a few short tears. Extremely rare pre-UPU letter to Italy.
A GREAT RARITY OF THE HALF-ROUND FRANCO POSTMARK ON 1870 ISSUE. THREE LETTERS KNOWN FROM AMBOINA. A MOST ATTRACTIVE EXHIBITION ITEM SENT TO A MEMBER OF THE SENATE OF THE KINGDOM OF ITALY IN FLORENCE.
About three letters are known from the Luigi Tanari correspondence, sent to a member of the upper house of the Italian Parliament in the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence during the period of the Italian monarchy. All letters are roughly opened at top and

Banda. 1870, 50 cent red with well-placed and complete Banda half-round franco postmark 12.10 1873. A very clear 100% postmark on a fine stamp of excellent colour with some thinning to back and a little tear top left; an excellent deluxe
strike of one of the rarest of the half-round franco postmarks from the office in the Banda Islands and the latest known date of this type, Bulterman Poststempels RR, Voerman RRR.

Batavia. 1870, two 50 cent red on very attractive envelope sent to St Brieuc, France; stamps tied to cover by two well-placed Batavia half-round franco cancel 28.2 1872 type VI with an additional strike on the front and manuscript “Port
payé”. Also red PD on front alongside a clear red octagonal “Indes. Neer. V.S. P.F. Amb. Mar.” (Salles I.891). St Brieuc arrival 2.4 1872 on back. A very attractive envelope with stamps in good condition with a few small stains; a very rare pre-UPU
letter paying a 100 cent double weight rate to France (marked “2” in red crayon on front).
In the lower left corner is a red oval sender’s cachet “Prytz Cramer & Co. Ship-Chandler and Commission Agents Batavia”. Newspapers from this time show Prytz Cramer & Co. offering wine and cognac from France. (Image 1)

Kedirie. 1870, 10 cent brown in pair on second weight letter from Kedirie to Batavia. The pair with excellent perforation, right stamp with a small nick in right side, tied to cover by clearly struck Kedirie half-round franco postmark
28.7 1872, with an additional strike on the cover, manuscript “Franco” below stamps. Batavia arrival 3.8 1872 on back. An extremely rare letter and most attractive, sent to the Parapattan Weezen Gesticht, an orphanage in Batavia; clean and tidy
folded letter sheet without content and with an institutional red seal on back.
AN IMPORTANT SECOND WEIGHT LETTER FROM KEDIRIE. TWO LETTERS RECORDED WITH THE KEDIRIE HALF-ROUND FRANCO CANCEL ON 1870 ISSUE. A RARITY OF THE NEI HALF-ROUND FRANCO.
The Parapattan Weezen Gesticht, one of the earliest orphanages in Indonesia, was founded in October 1832 by the British missionary W.H. Medhurst. The institution is still operating in Jakarta today.

Makassar. 1870, 10 cent brown strip of six on very appealing envelope sent to Amsterdam; stamps struck by three well-placed Makassar half-round franco postmarks 28.8 1873 with an additional strike on the front. Manuscript “Per Brindisi”
covered by the stamps and confirmed by framed NED-INDIE VIA BRINDISI BRITSCHE PAKKETB. Company cachet of M. Ohl & Co. Makassar on front and on back is Amsterdam arrival 27.10 1873. An exceptional strip of the 10 cent with excellent perforation all
around and only very minor flaws. Paying the first weight class by British packet pre-UPU via Brindisi 60 cent (Jan. 1871-May 1876). An exhibition item of high rarity.
