imagePre-Stamp Period: Intaglio “Frank” Seals, 1861–1873A remarkable group illustrating the pre-stamp period of Jammu & Kashmir, highlighting the significance of early postal markings prior to the introduction of adhesives. These early official markings are of exceptional rarity, with no more than 20 covers recorded, dated between 1861 and 1873, with usages noted in 1861, 1864–1867, and a late example in April 1873. According to the Anthony S. Bard archives, an early recorded item is dated 3 August 1861. Of particular importance is the present example, believed to be among the earliest known usages, bearing the orange-red Srinagar intaglio seal, dated 18 March 1861, on mail from Srinagar to Jammu. Cover from Srinagar with the octogonal orange-red seal to Jammu. The date on the cover is 5th Siam 1278 = 18. March 1861. Siam is another name for Ramadan. The Srinagar seal reads as (english): „By the grace of Sri Gadadhar - Post Office Srinagar – 1861 AD". A highly significant and rare postal history item, representing the formative stage of organized postal communication in the region. Condition commensurate with age. Another cover Mail originating from Jammu and addressed to British India was routed via Sialkot (Punjab), where it entered the British-Indian postal system. At Sialkot, such letters were franked with a ½ anna British-Indian adhesive, cancelled, and forwarded onward. The transit marking applied was the “SEALKOTE 54” duplex, recorded in use from June 1865 through approximately September 1867, spanning the late pre-stamp and early adhesive periods. The Jammu intaglio seal, struck in dull red, bears the inscription: “By the Grace of Sri Raghunath – Post Office Jammu – 1859 AD.” A fascinating illustration of cross-administration postal handling during the formative years of organized mail exchange between Jammu & Kashmir and British India. Rare and fine. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4)

O, 1 image1866–1867 An exceptional pair of outgoing covers from Jammu to Pind Dadan Khan, illustrating cross-border postal handling and transitional usages. The first, dated 10 July 1866, is franked with ½ anna and routed via Sialkot (10 July) and Jhelum (11 July). The cover is underpaid, lacking the required British-Indian postage, and bears a black “1 AS” marking indicating postage due—a notation of considerable interest and apparently unrecorded in the literature. The second cover, dated 5 November 1867, also bearing ½ anna grey-black, shows red transit markings of Sialkot (6 Nov.) and Jhelum (7 Nov.). On entry into the British-Indian postal system, a ½ anna British-Indian adhesive was applied and cancelled with the U-26 obliterator of Sialkot. Notably, this represents a late usage of the circular Jammu & Kashmir issue, occurring after the introduction of new stamp issues in September 1867. A highly instructive and scarce pair, illustrating postal rates, deficiencies, and inter-administration handling during a transitional period. (SG £1500) (Image 1)

O, 1, 4 image1866-68 An instructive pair of foreign letters from Jammu to British India, illustrating cross-border postal arrangements and the application of British-Indian postage. The first cover, dated 12 October 1866, is franked with ½ anna and addressed to Pind Dadan Khan, routed via Sialkot (13 Oct. 1866) and Jhelum (14 Oct. 1866). Upon entry into the British-Indian postal system, a ½ anna adhesive was applied and cancelled with the U-26 obliterator of Sialkot, recorded in use between 1866 and 1868. The second cover, dated 24 September 1866, is addressed to Amritsar and bears a 1 anna black of Jammu & Kashmir. Transit markings include Sialkot (25 Sept.) in red, with arrival at Amritsar (26 Sept.). The required British-Indian postage, in the form of two ½ anna adhesives, is cancelled with the scarce large diamond obliterator of the Sialkot Post Office. A scarce and highly informative duo, demonstrating postal rates, routing, and the interplay between Jammu & Kashmir and British-Indian postal systems during this period. 60336 DE 26-37 image1877 Handstamped in oil colours. A distinctive group from the 1877 handstamped issues printed in oil colours, produced from the original dies and plates, resulting in designs that are generally sharp and well-defined in principle. These printings are notable for their range of colour variants, including red to brownish-red, grey-black, slate blue, and olive green. Owing to the nature of the oil-based pigments, impressions are often irregular or partially smeared, particularly in the scarcer olive green shades, which frequently show less clarity. This characteristic softness and occasional smudging serve as a key distinction from the later, more clearly printed reprints. A specialized and collectible group, offering a range of shades and print characteristics. Condition as typical for the issue. (SG £1200+). (Image 1)

DE,, 38, 39, 41, 45 image1877 Oil Colour Issues on European Laid Paper, with Early Dated Cover. An exceptional and highly specialized group from the 1877 handstamped oil colour issues, printed on European laid paper. While earlier printings on local paper often resulted in smudged and indistinct impressions, the adoption of European laid paper led to improved clarity and marked the transition to the second series of oil colour printings. The group includes: ½ anna greyish-black, ½ anna red, a particularly rare stamp, unpriced unused in SG (used £2,250), 4 annas red, 1 anna slate blue in a block of eight, an impressive multiple. Also included is a remarkable and historically important cover, representing the earliest recorded usage of the issue. A cover bearing 1½ anna black, sent from Jammu to Amritsar, dated 31 January 1877, affixed on reverse to a ½ anna Queen Victoria British-Indian postal stationery. The adhesive is tied by the rare Jammu black square seal cancellation (Type 4). This example predates the previously recorded earliest usage (February 1877; literature ref. p.99), thereby establishing a new earliest known date for the issue. The ½ anna black represents the first stamp printed in this colour. The cover additionally bears the Sialkot City datestamp, used in conjunction with the barred L-3/8 obliterator at the British Post Office in Sialkot during 1876–1877. A superb and important assembly, combining rare stamps, multiples, and a key early-dated cover of great postal-historical significance. Rare and fine (SG £4000+). (Image 1)

DE,O 39 Alex remove this catal image1877-78 A fascinating and specialized group of the so-called “missing dies” reprints, produced in 1877–78 to meet strong demand from stamp dealers for used examples of the popular Jammu circular issues. To facilitate this, three new dies were prepared, replicating the original designs of the ½ anna, 1 anna, and 4 annas values. These reprints can be distinguished from the originals by several key characteristics: the impressions are notably clearer and more sharply defined than the earlier oil-colour printings, and they are typically found on thinner, more smoothly surfaced paper. The group includes a wide range of printings and paper types: ½ anna, 1 anna, and 4 annas in red, on European laid paper; ½ anna red and 4 annas orange-red, on European laid paper with watermark; ½ anna, 1 anna, and 4 annas in black, on smooth European paper; ½ anna yellowish-brown, 1 anna greyish-black, and 4 annas black, on yellowish laid paper. Of particular note is an example of the ½ anna bearing a native cancellation of Manovar, adding further interest and postal character to the group. A comprehensive and instructive assembly, illustrating the transition from original issues to later reprints, and offering valuable material for the specialist collector. (Image 1)

Forgery 39 alex remove this catal image1877-78 An instructive and important reference group comprising forgeries of the “missing dies” circular issues, alongside genuine examples for direct comparison. Included are: ½ anna circular – Missing Die forgery, with genuine example; 1 anna circular – Missing Die forgery, with genuine example; 4 annas circular – Missing Die forgery, with genuine example. These comparative pairs provide a valuable study of the differences in engraving, clarity, and overall execution between authentic reprints and contemporary forgeries produced to satisfy collector demand. The forgeries, while often deceptive at first glance, typically reveal distinctions in line quality, detail sharpness, and paper characteristics when examined alongside genuine impressions. A highly useful and educational group, ideal for the specialist seeking to understand and identify the complexities surrounding the Jammu & Kashmir circular issues and their later reproductions. 60340 DE,O, 52-85 image1867-1868 An outstanding and highly specialized assembly from the 1867–68 watercolour printings, produced in grey-black and shades of blue on native paper. In 1867, the Jammu authorities prepared a small composite plate of four subjects, comprising three units of 1½ anna and one unit of 1 anna (positioned in the upper left), each separated by a thin white dividing line. Printed in watercolour on locally produced paper, these issues reflect the need for supplementary printings derived from the earlier circular dies, resulting in a fascinating range of shades and characteristics. The collection comprises: 20+ stamps, including the rare 1 anna orange-red on native paper, as well as a used example of the same value. 18 covers, including several foreign destinations, many accompanied by certificates. Notable provenance including ex Masson and ex Garrett-Adams. Of particular importance is a remarkable cover dated 1876, bearing ½ anna bright emerald green (watercolour on native paper), tied by the Jammu black square seal on ½ anna British-Indian postal stationery. The cover is cancelled with the Sealkote duplex L-3 barred obliterator (April 27), with transit markings of Jhelum (April 28) and Bhera (April 29), and arrival at Loonmeanee (April 30). This important item is certified by the RPSL. A rare and comprehensive assembly, offering significant depth, important covers, and strong provenance—ideal for exhibition and advanced study (SG £15,000+). 60341 O, 87 image1866 ½ Anna Black, Single Die, Watercolour on Native Paper – Earliest Recorded Use A remarkable and historically important example of the ½ anna black, single die, printed in watercolour on native paper, recognized as the first stamp issued in Kashmir. Approximately 100 examples are recorded, of which only about 10 are on cover, with three unused and a single known pair, underscoring the rarity of this issue. Notably, this die was not located for defacement in 1898, precluding any possibility of later reprints. The present cover represents a major philatelic discovery. Previously, the earliest recorded usage was 3 October (Masson), later revised to 13 June (Staal). However, this example bears the date 23 Sawwal 1283 (Hijri calendar), corresponding to 11 March 1866, establishing it as the earliest known usage—and effectively a First Day Cover. The stamp is tied by a clear red Srinagar seal cancellation on an internal letter, preserving both postal and historical integrity. Accompanied by a Holcombe certificate, this is an exceptional rarity of the highest importance, representing a cornerstone item in the philately of Jammu & Kashmir. (SG £1600) (Image 1) (Image 2)
