60342 O, 87 image1866 A rare and important used example of the 1½ anna black, single die, printed in watercolour on native paper. This single-die issue remained in use for nearly a year and likely overlapped with the introduction of the circular issues imported from Jammu, reflecting a transitional phase in the postal system. Unused examples are of the utmost rarity, with only three recorded in the literature. Also included is an internal letter from Srinagar to British India, bearing a ½ anna black single-die stamp, cancelled by the red Srinagar seal, in combination with a ½ anna East India adhesive, cancelled by protective pen strokes and the numeral “54” obliterator of Sialkot in transit. This mixed franking illustrates the dual postal rate structure, whereby the Kashmir adhesive prepaid carriage to the frontier (up to 14 tolas single weight), and the British-Indian stamp paid onward delivery within British India. A rare and highly instructive postal history item, with notable provenance ex Eames Collection, and accompanied by a Sismondo certificate. (SG £2000+) (Image 1) (Image 2)

60343 O, 88 image1867 ½ Anna Black, First Composite Plate, Watercolour on Native Paper – Earliest Recorded Usage. A highly important example of the 1½ anna black, printed in watercolour on native paper from the first composite plate of the Old Rectangular issues of Kashmir. These issues were produced using watercolour inks, necessitated by the dry climatic conditions of the region, which were unsuitable for oil-based printing. The Kashmir printings can be distinguished from those of Jammu by the Dogri inscription within the inner oval, as well as the layout and dividing lines between subjects on the plate. The first composite plate consisted of 25 subjects, arranged in four rows of ½ anna values with a bottom row of 1 anna, reflecting the hybrid nature of early production. The earliest previously recorded dated example of the 1½ anna value is 1 April 1867, and only four covers bearing this first plate stamp are recorded (Nanjee). The present example is of exceptional significance, comprising an internal letter dated 21 Ramadan 1283 (Hijri calendar), corresponding to 28 January 1867, thereby establishing the earliest known usage of this issue. The stamp is tied by a clear red Srinagar seal cancellation, preserving its postal authenticity. Accompanied by a Holcombe certificate. A major rarity and key exhibition item, of the highest importance in the philately of Jammu & Kashmir. Very rare and fine (SG £1200) (Image 1) (Image 2)

The second composite plate comprises two horizontal strips of five subjects, with the upper row of ¼ anna and the lower row of 2 annas. These denominations reflect the special reduced-rate provision for European visitors to Kashmir, applicable to both regular and registered correspondence. The collection includes: A strip of five of the ¼ anna black on native paper, very fine A local letter bearing ¼ anna black, cancelled by the red Srinagar seal, with Sialkot transit and Amritsar arrival markings, notably without postage due (Jaretzky expertise) Two unused pairs in black and grey-black (positions 1–2 and 3–4) A foreign letter to Lahore, bearing 4 annas black (Kashmir) and 2 annas British India, cancelled by the Kashmir 5/L-6 duplex (in use 1875–1880), with Murree transit and “TOO LATE” marking Also present are: Two distinct shades of 2 annas buff (yellowish-brown) on native paper, used with Kashmir duplex cancellations Additional unused shades of 2 annas yellow, including a strip of five on native paper A particularly intriguing domestic letter bears a mixed franking of ½ anna blue, 1 anna orange-red, and 2 annas yellow (the latter two somewhat faded). The cover has been the subject of collector study, suggesting: Possible registered usage Address to spice merchants in Jammu A manuscript reference to an amount of 400 (possibly monetary) A likely date of 7 November 1875 Multiple seals and markings, including the number “74”, possibly of symbolic or administrative significance Further highlights include: 4 annas shades in sage green (early and late impressions) and emerald green, showing clear to watery impressions, both unused and used 4 annas and 2 annas on piece, cancelled by the red Srinagar seal Additional 4 annas examples as singles and strips, illustrating impressions from the single die 8 annas scarlet, including used examples with Kashmir cancellations, as well as unused singles (3) and a pair A selection of reprints in fancy colours A rich and wide-ranging collection, encompassing rare multiples, covers, and shade studies, offering exceptional scope for advanced research and exhibition. 60361   imagePostal Stationery: Accumulation (30+ Items), Used and Unused. A useful and well-described accumulation of 30+ postal stationery items, comprising both used and unused material. The majority of pieces are clean and of exhibition quality, with a smaller proportion in mixed condition, as to be expected in a lot of this nature. The material remains unchecked for varieties, and careful examination is likely to yield additional findings, making this an attractive opportunity for the specialist collector. A rewarding and study-oriented lot with strong potential. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
