10441   image1810 ca. Cover front from an unidentifiable locality in Peru to Madrid, endorsed “Pr. la Fagta. Suplicada” (“Suplicada” frigate), graced by a magnificent bold strike of “Perú” straight-line postmark applied on receipt. This is the only item known displaying the “Perú” of Cádiz used during the colonial period; of great significance and desirability as a “Peru” hs used in Spain. Before the discovery of this item, this postmark was believed to have been used in mid 1800’s, and not during the colonial dominion.(Image 1) (Image 2)

10444   imageTHE EARLIEST EXAMPLE KNOWN OF ANY OF THE WIDELY USED "ESPAÑA" POSTMARKS 1765 (Feb 2). Entire letter from Cádiz (Spain) to Lima, struck by fine red “España” straight-line hs, applied on departure, endorsed at lower left “q. D. C.” (Quem Deus Conserveat) and indicating the carriage by the merchant ship “Matamoros”, which followed the difficult route via Cape Horn. It was a single weight letter implying three Reales due from the addressee. After 1764 only the ports of Cádiz and Corunna, where the “España” marking was applied, could trade with the American colonies. The earliest recorded transatlantic letter displaying any of the extensively used “España” postmarks. Provenance: Sitjà.(Image 1) (Image 2)

The route of transport was Corunna-Havana-Cartagena de Indias-Santa Fe-Quito-Lima. The highest franking documented on mail to the Americas exhibiting any of the “España” postmarks. 10447   image1779 ca. Folded cover from Cádiz (Spain) to Lima, via Corunna and Buenos Aires, rated on departure with boxed “3 Pta.” marking, then transported overland to Corunna where it was struck by “España” straight-line postmark in a different shade in red, following embarkation on the “El Clarendón” frigate as validated by the endorsement at left, departing from the north of Spain to call at Buenos Aires in America, following an overland route via Potosí. An exceptional and very unusual combination of postmarks applied at Corunna and Cádiz, these cities being located far apart on the northern and southern coasts of Spain. Undated envelope from Rome (faint hs in black on front) to Arequipa, conveyed via Barcelona where the “Italia” straight-line was struck, transmitted overland to Corunna and hs “España” (Kouri type I) before being carried by maritime transatlantic means. The route followed was indicated with the “Por la Coruña- Buenos Ayres-Perú” endorsement, involving Potosi for the inland carriage in South America. The earliest cover documented, originating from any Italian State, bearing the “España” postmark. Provenance: Camino and Sitjà.(Image 1) (Image 2)

10449   image1790 ca. Undated folded cover from Cádiz via Corunna to Lima, initially struck on dispatch with red “España” hs at bottom, with a similar strike of Corunna applied at top (Kouri types I & II), presumably having paid 5 Reales, of which 2 corresponding to inland fees, and conveyed via Buenos Aires. This mail, instead of being embarked at Cádiz, was placed on board a ship calling at Corunna which had most probably planned an earlier departure. The only cover documented displaying two different “España” postmarks, this being an absolutely exceptional feature, as these were applied in two different cities in Spain. Provenance: Camino and Sitjà.(Image 1) (Image 2)

10455   image1807 (Nov 11). Entire letter from Cádiz (Spain), departing from the metropolitan peninsula without application of postmarks, indicating, with “Fragata Monticello” endorsement”, the carriage by the American frigate “Monticello”, exhibiting “España” straight-line hs in red, which is believed to have been applied on arrival at Lima. During the period comprised between 1796 and 1808, due to war events between France, England and Spain, part of the commerce connecting Spain and America was performed by ships of neutral countries such as Portugal, modern-day Germany, United States and others. With the purpose of avoiding attacks against the interests of Spain, and consequently those of its citizens, Spanish dealers were able to contract ships from these neutral origins. One of these contracts was signed between the Lavalle family and the Gordon & Murphy company, in order to carry goods from Cádiz to Lima by the American frigate “Monticello”; this ship also infrequently carried mail between these two ports. An absolutely exceptional item by being the only cover recorded exhibiting this “España” postmark (believed to originate from Lima), which possess distinctly remarkable characteristics in its shape in contrast with other “España” types. Furthermore, the earliest item known carried to Spanish South America by a non-Spanish ship. Provenance: Camino and Sitjà.(Image 1) (Image 2)

10456   image1808 ca. Folded cover from Madrid to Arequipa, indicating royal mail with remarkable “Por el Rey dn. Ferndo. 7°” patriotic endorsement in ink at top, indicating the name of the King Fernando VII, paying an up to one ounce weight with “13” Reales in manuscript, including 10 Reales of the maritime fee, struck in transit by red “Cadiz” postmark. This cover may have been sent either in 1808, when the French invaded Spain and Napoleon later overthrew Fernando VII, or from 1814, when Fernando VII was able to return to Spain to be proclaimed King again. Vertical fold not detracting. Very appealing and most rare. Provenance: Camino.(Image 1) (Image 2)

Puerto Rico

Outgoing Mail
Lot Symbol Catalog No. Descrip Opening
10457   image1802 (Aug 23). Entire letter from San Juan de Puerto Rico to Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain), hs on dispatch with Italic “Islas De/Barlovento” postmark (P.E. 19), carried via Havana to Coruna, entering Spain at this port and erroneously struck with “España” straight-line (Kouri type II), which was intended to be used on outgoing and not incoming mail to Spain, therefore being mistakenly treated as mail from the Peninsula and rated “1” Real in manuscript at Tenerife. An exceptional usage as a result of the following features: the extraordinary application of the “España” postmark on incoming mail to Spain, one of just three letters documented bearing the “Islas De Barlovento” & “España” maritime hs in conjunction, believed to be unique with an erroneous internal rate on incoming transatlantic mail to Spain. Entire letter from San Juan to Barcelona, cleanly hs by two- line “Islas De/Barlovento.” Postmark (P.E. 6) in red, charged on delivery with “5R”, with clear receiving datestamp on reverse. A most infrequent usage of this type on mail from Puerto Rico; as a matter of fact, no examples with type 6 were included in the extensive and renowned Gaspar Roca collection of Puerto Rico.(Image 1) (Image 2)
