10422   image1809 (Nov 6). Entire letter from Veracruz to Cádiz (Spain), with endorsement, deleted at top, indicating carriage by an indistinct frigate which was not available at that moment, then amended to “Frag.ta Ynglesa Lilly” at lower left, showing carriage by the English “Lilly” frigate, this letter leaving Veracruz after the application of Italic two-line “Nueva/España.” hs in black (P.E. 9) and, as per 1807 tariff, hs on arrival with “7R” rate marking for the single weight, to be paid by the recipient. This, the only cover recorded from Mexico carried by a British ship before 1815, also represents the earliest letter recorded carried by a non-Spanish ship from Spanish Caribbean ports. Of great fascination and interest, from both the historical and postal points of view. Note: In 1815, when the commerce was opened to foreign nations, Spain allowed access to foreign vessels to their Caribbean ports. Nevertheless, there is but one instance recorded of a British ship touching port in Mexico, this exception being the British frigate “Lilly”, which directly carried this letter from Veracruz to Cádiz in 1809. At that time, Spain had been invaded by Napoleon and was fighting its War of Independence against France, an event which induced an alliance with England. Occasionally British warships were the sole means of maintaining communication with the Colonies, since part of the Spanish fleet had been taken over by the French. Provenance: Rosenthal and Sitjà.(Image 1) (Image 2)

10425   image1833 (Nov 19). Entire letter from Mérida to Charleston (United States), correctly charged with “4” Reales marking as per single rate, transported by the Spanish mails with “Yndias” straight-line hs (P.E. 5) struck in Mexico. Closed tear on front of no significance for this important item. One of just two covers recorded exhibiting the “Yndias” postmark on mail addressed to the United States. Note: The “Yndias” marking denoted mail originating from Spanish American colonies on correspondences sent to Spain; consequently, in this instance was erroneously and exceptionally struck. Provenance: Sitjà.(Image 1) (Image 2)

10430   image1798 (April 16). Ship’s register envelope from Cádiz to Veracruz of the Spanish “Nuestra Señora del Rosario y San Jacinto” xebec, bearing “Se Franqueó/En Cadiz.” two-line postmark, centrally and well struck in red, with signatures of the Cádiz and Veracruz postmasters recording dispatch and receipt, sealed on reverse with “Real Aduana de Cadiz-Comercio Libre de Yndias” red wax with coat of arms, and consequently, as sealed correspondence, being subjected to pay the postal fees. On reverse, marked in manuscript with “Pagó 60 Rs”, representing postage paid for a weight of 3 3/4 ounces. Of great importance, the earliest documented ship’s register cover carried from Spain to America, being the only example known before the publication of the additional Royal Order of 1818 regulating this postal service. Note: It should be considered that these transatlantic stampless postal documents are scarcer if originating from Spain (no more than ten in the whole colonial period) than all those examples known from the Americas (less than twenty). 10434   image1792 (Aug 1). Entire letter from Corn Island (off the Nicaraguan coast) to Bristol (Great Britain), conveyed via Havana to be embarked on a Spanish Royal Mail Service ship, after application of Italic “Islas De/Barlovento” hs (P.E. 31) in red at Havana, thence to Corunna in Spain to be forwarded inland to France, where this mail was censored as indicated by internal “Vue/Interprète” signed notation below contents, as well as the red crayon “880” & “G” markings on front and the oval cachet of the French Republic on reverse. One shilling manuscript rate in England crossed out and replaced with “1/5” one shilling five pence. Interesting extract of the letter: “The Mosquito Shore is in convulsion, but we have received no insult”. There is a manuscript docket of receipt inside of July 9, 1795, which lead to believe that the letter was retained in France for three years, including the period of the War of the First Coalition in which also England and Spain were involved against France. An exceptional example of censored transatlantic mail in this early and turbulent period in Europe, further enhanced by another very rare usage of the “Islas De Barlovento” postmark -denoting a Spanish American postal territory- on mail to England. Provenance: Sitjà.(Image 1) (Image 2)

10439   image1805 (Sept 26). Folded registered cover from Lima to Santiago (Chile), transported by the “La Primera” frigate as endorsed at lower left, displaying bold strikes of “Certifcacion/A.Lima” two-line and “Franca” straight-line hs in red, charged at double rate in manuscript on reverse for a total of 7 1/2 Reales including 5 Reales of the maritime fee and 2 1/2 Reales. Annotated as received including date and signature inside, as stipulated for registered mail by postal rules. Registered maritime mail is exceedingly scarce, and of great postal-history interest as an extraordinary service rarely used in this period, with just fewer than five maritime examples known. Although not being maritime mail, a similar registered cover, bearing the same postmarks and dated 1807, August 29, is also included in this lot to demonstrate the difference between the maritime and overland rates, the former being of lower cost than the postage applied on mail conveyed overland to Chile; in this case, as handwritten on reverse, being 161/2 reales, including 10 reales registration fee. Provenance: Kouri and Sitjà.(Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4)
