Handmade envelope (opened for display) from Spain to a Brigadier, Politician and Governor in Chiloé (Chile), exhibiting manuscript “Por Buenos Ayres, Chile, y Valdivia” routing mark placed, as usual, at lower left, transported via Corunna with red “España” straight-line hs, following the American inland route Buenos Aires- Santiago de Chile-Valparaíso-Valdivia, with two strikes of Italic “Chile” postmark in red hs at Santiago. The manuscript “55” Reales maritime rate was equivalent to the 51/2 ounces weight, additionally with 131/2 reales matching the inland fee for a total of 681/2 (“683/4” also handwritten on front, according to the 1778 tariff). Large cover front from Madrid to the Governor of Chiloé (Chile), displaying nearly complete framed oval with coat of arms, a scarce marking applied on “Por el Rey” royal mail, carried via Lima where the framed “MZ” was struck, indicating the postal fee was annotated in a special account of the Real Renta de Correos. Handwritten “390” maritime and “195” inland rates, totalling 585 reales corresponding to 39 pounds, this being one of the highest rates recorded in the Spanish colonial maritime mail. Cover (two back flaps lacking) from Cartagena to Havana, hs on dispatch by framed “Cartagena/De Indias./Debe.” and Italic “Santa Fé” postmarks, the latter being deleted probably due to avoid confusion to identify the locality of dispatch which required the application of a due (“Debe”) marking. Transported by the “Cazadón” brigantine, and the postage to be collected on receipt being 3 reales for 1 1/2 oz. The Santa Fé postal district comprised territories in present-day Colombia and Panama. The “Santa Fe” postmark was not only used at Santa Fé de Bogotá, but also in the area of its district, as stipulated by postal rules of 1st September 1779. The only cover recorded from Cartagena with the “Santa Fé” postmark, and one of just two known displaying this usage outside the city of Santa Fé de Bogotá, further enhanced by the unusual destination. 10407 ,   image1773-1860 An extraordinary stampless postal history assembly containing 78 items, including 1776 the earliest example recorded of any of the extensively used "Islas De Barlovento" postmarks in America and the earliest usage of the "Yndias" marking in Cuba, an abundant display of "Islas de Barlovento" examples including very rare 1785 entire to France or a 1804 entire stating the capture of a Spanish ship carrying mail from Cuba, unique or very rare combinations of this postmark with local handstamps, the rarest "Islas de Barlovento" type (two examples known), very rare usages in black, etc; five of just sixteen ship's register covers recorded sent from Latin American origins, of which four with different combinations of postmarks with "Islas De Barlovento" and most of them being unique in conjunction, a very rare usage of the "Indias" postmark (only four known), high rates such as 335 reales paid on arrival in Madrid, an extremely scarce usage of the "Nueva España" hs on mail from Cuba, a probably unique wrong application of the "Buenos Ayres" pmk in Spain on mail from Cuba, one of two items recorded with the "Yndias" hs of San Sebastián, the unique pre-philatelic registered cover sent abroad and this in addition being very rarely sent to Colombia, a rare official mail from Cienfuegos to Spain (two recorded). The "Empresa de Correos Marítimos" section comprises usages with very few examples recorded (P.E. 45, the earliest of at most 5 known or P.E. 6) or a rare mail originating from Puerto Príncipe and will continue in the incoming mail part (see next paragraph). With regards to the British P.O. one cover displays the "Paid/At/Havana" crowned circle. The destinations throughout include Spain, France, Colombia, Mexico, Guatemala. The incoming mail section mainly comprises mail from Spain, but also from France. In the highlights from Spain we find the only example recorded of Spanish military franchise used on transatlantic mail, "a probably unique usage in conjunction of the "Havana" & "España" pmks, one of very few items known with the mistakenly used "Yndias" pmk on incoming mail, the only cover recorded bearing the extensively used "España" marking in manuscript, the unique "Empresa" cover with "S" & "NA" (P.E. 69 & 63), four of just six (the majority) ship's register covers known prior to the introduction of postage stamps and the only one of all in existence also from -America- with its contents (paradoxically all originate from Spain), a very rare combination of the "España" and the Cuban "Nuevitas" pmks, a very rare incoming letter disinfected in Havana and unique with the "Yndias/E" hs (P.E. 56) in blue, a combination of a Correo Marítimo with and Yndias hs, one of three "Correo Maritimo./N°.2" struck in yellow, a high 32 reales rate on cover carried through the "Empresa de Correos Marítimos", rare incoming mail from France through the "Empresa", very rare "E./NE" pmk on mail from France and Great Britain, examples of the "N. Europa" marking from the "Empresa", etc. In addition an internal ship's register cover from Havana to La Siguapa Cay in Cárdenas, being an extraordinarily rare kind of postal document used in Cuba. Generally in very fine condition for this territory, which is affected by tropical conditions. A unique opportunity to obtain an extraordinary collection with many rarities which would represent the highlights of a highly awarded FIP exhibit. One of the earliest letters originating from Spanish America addressed to England via France, and a very rare mail not sent to a Spanish destination and showing a postmark indicating a Spanish American postal demarcation (“Guatemala”). Folded cover from Guatemala to El Puerto de Santa María (Spain), with green origination c.d.s. and “4” rate marking, with subsequent application, in Cádiz, of the following postmarks: black “Nueva/España” and blue “Islas De/Barlovento” in two lines (the former indicating provenance from Mexico, the latter struck in Cuba or Puerto Rico, and erroneously applied on this cover). With reference to the rate applied, two markings of 5 and 8 Reales were overstruck (8 Reales paid the postage from Guatemala, whereas the 5 Reales refer to the fee for incoming mail from Cuba and Puerto Rico). An exceptional and most rare example of mail displaying the “Nueva España” and “Islas de/Barlovento” postmarks used in conjunction. Ship’s register envelope belonging to the “Señor San Joséf y las Animas” brigantine, following the maritime journey from Campeche to Havana, struck with “Campeche” straight-line and fancy “Franca./Canobas” hs, both on departure, with postal clerk’s signature as regulated. The manuscript “13” notation on reverse indicates the fee paid by the sender for the 6 1/2 ounces weight, with wax and paper seals illustrating the Spanish coat-of-arms and, therefore, as sealed correspondence, paying postal fees. Usual few edge imperfections, in no way detracting. The only ship’s register cover known having origin in Mexico during the colonial period, further enhanced by representing the earliest usage documented of these postmarks.
