10387 DE Scott Scott 36 image1871, "Escuelas" 50r yellow-green, first printing, a remarkable pair possessing clear to ample margins, delightfully fine impression, unused without gum. The pair has probably been removed from a document or ledger page as the reverse of the stamps show ink marks that have seeped through onto the paper; slight discolouration at lower left corner, in no way detracting. The highest denomination of this issue, with only 1,000 printed, is a great rarity in unused condition and unique as a pair. Cert. Holcombe (1995) and Moorhouse (2013). 10388   imageTHE EARLIEST COVER FROM THE AMERICAS EXHIBITING A RATE MARKING 1764 (Oct 31). Entire letter from Córdoba del Tucumán to Granada (Spain), most probably completing the route via Buenos Aires-Montevideo-Cádiz, struck on arrival with red “Andalucia/la Alta” two-line handstamp and “4” rate marking, to be paid by the addressee. The letter was unpaid on dispatch, following the usual practice before the application of the 20.8.1764 tariff. The earliest known usage of a rate handstamp on a letter originating from the Americas, also representing the first recorded transatlantic postal fee applied in Europe. Provenance: Kouri and Sitjà.(Image 1) (Image 2)

10389   imageTHE EARLIEST EXAMPLE KNOWN OF ANY OF THE EXTENSIVELY USED "YNDIAS" HANDSTAMPS 1767 (March 21). Entire letter from Buenos Aires to Cádiz, carried via Portugal as denoted by the black “Portvgal” entry postmark applied at Badajoz in Spain, following application of “Yndias” straight-line and “4.Rs” due marking, both struck in red on arrival. From Cádiz, the letter, after being turned, was re-addressed inland to Eibar in Northern Spain, charged in manuscript at 5 cuartos and bearing “Andalucia/Alta” two-line handstamp in red. The earliest known cover displaying any of the extensively used “Yndias” markings; its attractiveness is further augmented by the fact of being one of just three Spanish colonial letters recorded carried via Portugal. 10391   image1776 (March 14). Entire letter sent by Manuel de Basavilbaso, Postmaster of Buenos Aires, to Gerónimo Grimaldi, Marquis of Grimaldi, Spanish State Secretary and “Superintendente General de Correos y Postas de España” (the highest authority of the Spanish post). The front shows in manuscript the letter to be carried by the “La Infanta” frigate and its Captain Solís, this ship belonging to the Corunna-Buenos Aires maritime line, which departed from Montevideo on March 25 and arrived at Corunna on June 19. The text inside mentions that a half barrel of “yerba mate” (maté), addressed to the Marquis of Grimaldi, is transported by the “La Infanta”. The letter was sent free of charge, thus following the norm for official mail sent between postal authorities. Ink erosion on front, of no importance. Of great significance and historical fascination, being the only recorded transatlantic mail, in private hands, addressed to a Spanish State Secretary in the XVIII century.
