10360   image1874 (Aug 24). Envelope sent free of charge from Santiago to England, addressed to Bellefontaine prés Montereau (France), with illustrated ''Sociedad Nacional de Agricultura/Chile 1869'' marking with cow, plough and bale, as well as ''Dirección General de Correos/Receptoría(?) de Chile'' handstamp with postman riding a horse, "Santiago/Chile" cds and framed ''Franca'', the latter three all in violet. The cover shows on reverse the cachet of the Chilean consulate in Liverpool, which makes believe that this mail was most probably carried in a mail bag for diplomatic correspondence carried via Panama and addressed to the Chilean consul in Liverpool, from where it was forwarded to France via the regular mail, posted and franked with very fine Great Britain 1874 6 d. grey (pl. 13, ''Huth'' perfin),tied by "Liverpool 16 OC 74" duplex, with red oval ''PD'' alongside, showing French transits and arrival on front and reverse. Cover with imperfections due to rough opening at top, nevertheless an exceptional, fascinating and probably unique mixed franking of Chilean official mail with Great Britain stamps, including a most rare usage of transatlantic diplomatic mail. Provenance: Ángel Menéndez.(Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

10364 S.F.C. 1 imageTHE LARGEST FRANKING OF THE "NUMBER ONE" ON COVER 1853, First London Printing, 5c red-brown on blued paper, five single examples, with predominantly large margins with just three touched on one side, used on second page of entire letter from Santiago to Valparaiso, each neatly tied by six barred target handstamp in black with pre-philatelic "SANTIAGO" straight-line postmark below, used in lieu of the circular datestamp and presumably used between July 1st and August 15th, 1853. Acid ink corrosions and folds of sheet internally reinforced, in no way detracting from the great appeal and rarity of this exhibition item. The highest known multiple franking of this stamp, with the greater significance of being the "Number One" of Chilean philately. Cert. B.P.A. (1992). Note: Only one similar cover originating from the same correspondence is recorded, and it was use to embellish the front cover of the Gerhard Blank auction catalogue by Robson Lowe (lot 922), which was sold for CHF16,875 in 1991. Provenance: Gerhard Blank (Robson Lowe, December 1991, lot 923).(Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

10365 S.F.C. 5 imageTHE LARGEST LITHOGRAPHED GILLET 5C FRANKING ON FOREIGN MAIL 1854, Lithographed by Henri Gillet, 5 c. pale red-brown, two examples, the one at right cut slightly into on one side, otherwise well margined, the example at left showing good to huge margins with portion of adjoining stamp at base, both used on 1854 double weight entire letter to Bordeaux, endorsed "par voie de Panama & d'Angleterre", each tied by target handstamps in black with red dispatch cds at right on November 29. Reverse with British P.O. double-arc ds of Valparaiso struck in transit, and obverse showing two-line "Panama/Transit" hs in red and "21" décimes due on arrival, backstamped in London, Paris and Bordeaux (Jan. 26, 1855). We only record three genuine covers sent abroad exhibiting the Gillet lithographed issue (all sent to Bordeaux), this being unique with two stamps and representing the largest franking of this stamp on external mail; considering the scarcity of this stamp on cover, this is a true gem of Chilean postal history. We want to make note that the single franking from the "Islander" collection (Siegel auctions N.Y, June 2008, lot 132) was sold for US$8,000 -"(Islander) has seen just one other cover to Europe with the Lithograph issue"-. Certs. Maier (2007) and Moorhouse (2010). Provenance: Joaquín Gálvez (1979, lot 3356, sold for CHF5,000) and Ulf Siebel.(Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4)

10367 S S.F.C. 7 (var) imageCANCELLED STAMPS FOR ROWLAND HILL’S NEPHEW ORMOND HILL 1855, Second London printing, 5c red-brown on blued paper, position 2, an excellent example displaying large margins and with watermarked lines at left, bright colour, neatly struck with "CANCELLED" obliterator and preserving its original gum. Illustrated in the Peter Jaffe handbook on page 37. One of just three examples recorded out of the six that can exist. Cert. BPA (1995). Note (as quoted by Peter Jaffe in "Cancelled by Perkins Bacon“, published for Spink & Son Ltd by James Bendon Ltd (1998): In April 1861 Ormond Hill, the nephew of Rowland Hill, asked to Joshua Butters Bacon, the head of Perkins Bacon & Co., to procure him six specimens of new or uncommon stamps for him or his friends. In August, the Perkins Bacon & Co. sent obliterated examples of each of the stamps named in a list by Ormond Hill. It turned out that the supply of the Crown Agents‘ property was given without authority and Ormond Hill was not asked to return the "specimens". As a consequence, the case damaged Perkins Bacon reputation and its task as printers for the Crown Agents. The Stanley Gibbons catalogue prices such Ormond Hill, Perkins Bacon "CANCELLED" stamps of the British colonies at £9000 to £32000, only six examples of each stamp can exist at most. Provenance: Dr. Conrad Latto and Joseph Hackmey.(Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

The 5c has a closed tear at top, of little significance for this impressive item for exhibition, featuring a, as far as we can say, unique combination franking within the desirable small group of mixed usages known bearing the imperforate and perforated "Colón" issues. 10374 Scott 4 imageA UNIQUE COMBINATION FRANKING WITH TWO SAME DENOMINATIONS FROM DIFFERENT FIRST-ISSUE STAMPS A VERY RARE POSTAL FRAUD 1869-73, 1r yellow-buff, full to large margins, in combination with two well margined examples of 1r green, both being previously used and applied on judicial wrapper (reduced at right) from Quito to Guaranda, with "6" ounces weight indicated at right correctly paid with 3 reales according to the special reduced rate applied to judicial correspondence, each stamp tied by "3154" dotted lozenges of Quito. The two 1r green stamps were fraudulently used as they were previously cancelled with a dotted lozenge struck in a colour-contrasting greyish ink which does not touch the wrapper, and were affixed with a particular gum which left traces of grease; in addition, the 1r yellow was also previously used as it shows an ink stroke which is not apparent on the other two values. This is one of just five genuine items which are believed to exist exhibiting two of the same denominations from different first-issue stamps -only possible with the 1r yellow and 1r green-, and this particular combination franking is unique, being even more desirable in comparison to the other four because of the postal fraud.
