20731   image1919 (April 27) Large registered express envelope to Milan, sent by the Italian correspondent of the "Illustrazione Italiana" magazine who had the privilege to use the postal system of the "Commissione Italiana di Armistizio" (using the courier to Trento), franked by the sender with Trento & Trieste 20c on 20c two strips of three and 45c on 45c, uncancelled on departure as usual, forwarded with courier to Trento, where the franking was not cancelled and highlighted with blue crayon, as this issue in "centesimi di corona" currency had lost its validity one week before (19.4), with this office consequently re-franking the cover with "Floreale" 45c two pairs, "Leoni" 5c, "Michetti" 20c and express 25c pair, making up a 2,05 lire paying the quintuple rate, tied by military P.M. 124 cds (obviously in Trento), with the postal military authorities not applying a tax because presumably they had the ability to contra-charge the magazine against a credit for the postage due; on arrival, the "centesimi di corona" franking was tied; some faults to be expected in such a large item. A spectacular and unique usage. Cert. Colla (1993) and Enzo Diena (1994).(Image 1) (Image 2)

20746 Sassone Michel imagePlebiscite of Marienwerder. 1920 (March 20) Postcard from Marienwerder to Milan from one member of the Italian contingent to control the plebiscite. As it was the case in Allenstein and Upper Silesia, there was uncertainty on how to handle the first dispatch of mails from these territories, and some delay occurred; following the example of Upper Silesia, the sender initially used a local stamp to frank the correspondence, but the first dispatch in Marienwerder was distinctive by applying additionally the Italian franking, as required for its onward transmission through a civil P.O. in Italy (Verona) and not a military one (in contrast, Allenstein and Upper Silesia used the base military P.O. of Bologna). The sender wrote "a 1/2 (mezzo) corriere militare" (through military courier), applied a marginal first issue 20pf, tied by "Commission Interalliée Gouvernement et Plebiscite/Marienwerder" cachet in violet, and an Italian "Leoni" 15c alongside, and both were tied by "Verona ferrovia" cds on 13.4 when it entered the Italian domestic mail. An extremely rare and exceptional carriage exclusive of the first dispatch from the Italian contingent.(Image 1) (Image 2)
