This cover is one of two recorded official envelopes for “AR” services (only example of this type) and would accompany an original mailed item for return to acknowledge receipt of the mailing by the addressee, rare and very fine, ex Fred Dunn

30063   imageLETTER FROM THE SULTAN TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES 1889 (May 4) Personal stationery envelope from Sultan Khalifa-bin-Said with exquisite enclosure both written in Arabic sent to President Benjamin Harrison of the United States and having been carried privately. The enclosure is a letter of recommendation from the Sultan commending a United States ship captain who had recently visited Zanzibar. Envelope has faults at upper left. One of three key items of Zanzibar postal history.

30064   image1889 (Aug 21) Sultan Khalifa-bin-Said’s personal stationery envelope sent registered to George Mackenzie, Partner & Director of the Imperial British East Africa Company (IBEA) in London (receiving oval date-stamp 20 September) via Aden (7 September), bearing 11a franking of 1882-90 8a & 3a each tied with type 6 date-stamp, a 20mm circle, “ZANZIBAR” in arc at top & “REG” above date. Envelope is addressed both in Arabic & English and displays the Sultan’s cartouche on reverse flap. Minor envelope damage at lower right. Remarkable and highly attractive postal history item.

Notes: All four covers are recorded in June – August 1890, with all reported to he same addressee and are presumably from the Company’s agents in Zanzibar & Mombasa. Two similar covers are known from British East Africa, one of which recently sold at auction for £28,000. The Eastern Telegraph Company was responsible for laying the underwater cables between Zanzibar, Mombasa, & Lamu.
