Posted from St Mary's franked by a fine 1d black (NC, Plate 9; 4 good to wide margins) tied by a fine ‘bounced’ strike of the St Mary’s black Maltese Cross, matching the very fine "SCILLY" cds (IS5; just crossed by filing crease) on the front (with red London 1 Apr. arrival backstamp). The contents inc a covering letter to the addressee plus a full detailed one page account of the sinking of the schooner Caroline, on passage from Newport to Barcelona, on Seven Stones reef. The rescue was conducted by longboat, manned by 5 men, who due to the rough seas had to head back to land, 14 miles away, in heavy seas having saved just one member of the Caroline's crew.
