WRECK OF THE SS SCHILLER - MAIL FROM NORFOLK TO NEW ZEALAND WHERE UNCLAIMED & RETURNED: 23 July 1874 long damaged env. (stamps
floated off) originally sent Registered from Harleston, Norfolk to Wangarei, New Zealand where it received various ms cachets Not called for - Try Wangaroa, etc. Returned to sender, via New York, departing Auckland 14 Mar. 1875. Loaded onto the Eagle
Line SS Schiller departing New York 27 Apr. 1875 bound for Plymouth, but in dense fog Schiller ran aground on the Retarriere Ledge near Bishop Rock with great loss of life. Some mails were picked up by the SS Pommerania and this env. was struck with
a boxed "Saved from the wreck of / the Schiller" hs - this the same hand stamp that had been used previously for the wreck of the Colombo with that ships named excised. A much travelled and rare survivor. [Illustrated in S.I.P.H., p.19] [Argyll Etkin
