672   imageSIR CLOUDESLEY SHOVELL SIGNED DOCUMENT: 1689 letter "By the Principal Officers & Commissioners of His Maj. Navy" appointing Charles Yates Master Carpenter of HMS Crown and signed by Admiral Cloudesley Shovell, Admiral Richard Haddock, etc. Shovell went on to be an Admiral of the Fleet. On returning from a successful campaign inc. a battle at Toulon, his flag ship HMS Association and three other ships ran aground on the Scillies with the loss of over 2,000 personnel. Shovell's body was found washed up on St Mary's. Several newspaper cuttings about a 1967 expedition to recover bullion, etc., from the wreck of Association included. (Image)

676   image1796 JAMAICA LETTER LANDED ON THE SCILLIES DUE TO BAD WEATHER: Oct. 1796 EL Greenwall, Jamaica to London with fine IAMAICA hs across reverse join, carried by the Westmoreland, which along with several other ships in Jan. 1797 were hit by bad weather and took shelter at Hugh Town, St Marys. Passed to a vessel that had been boarded and inspected then landed by that vessel at St Mary's where it was struck with a fine SCILLY hs (W&J IS1) struck so hard albino hs on internal pages! 678   imageTHE SCILLY ISLANDS POVERTY APPEAL - LETTER WITH GUERNSEY SCROLL CANCEL: 1819 EL to London with fine GUERNSEY scroll cancel (W&J CI44) and rated 2/2. The letter from Admiral Sir James Saumarez states "I request you will pay to the Fund for the relief of the inhabitants of the Scilly Isles the sum of £45.2.4 subscribed in this island according to the Printed paper enclosed.. etc". The letter lists the donors and there is a contemporary newspaper clipping attached to the letter listing the donors and the amount given. Cornwall extract from a c.1835 County Guide which include a fine map of Cornwall with Scilly inset plus 1834 copy of the Saturday Magazine with Scilly article inc. fine engraving of St Agnes Lighthouse.
