LARGE ST. KITTS FLEURON COVER TO SCOTLAND WITH NEWS OF CAPTURE OF MARTINIQUE, ETC.; Fine 5 Apr. 1809 EL from Major J.A. Farquarson
in "St. Christopher" to "Aberdeen" with a mainly very fine large "ST. KITT'S" fleuron nicely placed on the front and charged "2/6" with red 20 Mar. Edinburgh transit cds nearby. The interesting contents include; "...four English Mails arrived
[together] in the Island the day before yesterday... I understand that such delay has not been known in the Post Office for twenty years past.... You will have heard ere now that Martinique has fallen & fortunately before the succours arrived from
France, as three Seventy Fours & three Frigates have arrived in these Seas lately with Two Thousand Troops on Board & Guadeloupe , the only Island which France has now in the W. Indies, not affording them anchorage, they have been obliged to take
shelter under the Saints, some barren rocks near that Island, where they are blockaded by Sir A. Cochrane with five Sail of the Line, all we have on the Station, so that should any more come from France we must expect that they will be followed by a
British Squadron, or they will be too many... we have only lost three men by Sickness since I wrote last, but our Light Company suffered considerably at the Siege, having had their Captain & three Men killed with 14 wounded, several of whom have lost
legs & arms. We expect 400 Men every day to join this Battalion from our Second, which I regret will most likely remove us from this Island as there are only Barracks for our present numbers...". Very significant Military contents. Cross
