BATTLE OF NAVARINO - PART EYE-WITNESS ACCOUNT WITH "SHIP LETTER/PLYMOUTH"; [c.1 Nov.] 1827 E (side-flaps removed) from HMS Gannet to
"George Rodney Mundy Esq." (1805-44; subsequently famous for his exploits in Labuan/Sarawak with Rajah Brooke against the indigenous tribes) in London charged "1/7" with a mainly fine framed step-type "SHIP LETTER/PLYMOUTH" and 9 Jan. 1828 London
arrival cds on the flap. The contents reveal that the letter (of which only part remains after some fool cut away the flaps and inner sheet) was written by the future 3rd Baron Kensington while he was serving with Codrington's force; "...after coming
out of Navarin with a whole skin...I find myself Acting Commander of H.M. Sloop Gannet. Lord Ingestre was sent to England with the dispatches [&] I was first on the Admiralty list...I cannot give any very clear account of the Action, first of all I
was so frightened and secondly I was stationed on the lower deck where thanks to teak ships I was quite safe, but it was rather hot work for three or four hours and then they [the enemy ships] all blew up...". Fragmentary but fascinating. [Originally
discovered by our describer in a postmarks collection!] Cross Reference: GREECE, MILITARY, SHIP LETTERS, NAVAL MAIL (Image)

LISBON - 1d NAVAL CONCESSION RATE COVER WITH STITCH-MARKS FOR AN ATTACHED 1d COIN; Highly unusual 8 Dec. 1836 EL (somewhat dusted,
small peripheral faults) to Sheerness, headed "From J.Walker Seaman on board H M Ship Russell Lisbon" and endorsed below by the Commanding Officer for the Sailor's 1d Concession Rate. There is a circle of small needle-holes at the bottom left of the
address panel where a 1d coin had been sown on (the holes go through each layer of the paper) to pay for the letter's postage on arrival in England. There is a fine red London "PAID" cds (24 Dec.) on the front, and a matching fine "LONDON" Foreign
Branch cds of the same day, showing that this letter arrived by Packet Ship and so saved the addressee 1s-7d Packet Rate. Rare evidence for 1d coins being sent along with Concession rate mail; endorsed "1d Paid" just below the circle of holes. Superb
