302   imageAUGUST VON KOTZEBUE - BEETHOVEN LIBRETTIST & PLAYWRIGHT - A.L.S. REF. HIS SON's BOOK ON HIS PACIFIC ISLANDS TRAVELS; Remarkable and fine 1 Feb. 1819 EL written in German (full transcript & translation included), signed by the famous German playwright August von Kotzebue (1761-1819) shortly before he was wrongly murdered as a Russian spy (research notes included; see Wikipedia entries for both father & son). Sent from "MANNHEIM" (faint red namestamp on the front) to the publisher Eduard Kummer in "Leipzig"; it concerns the imminent publication of the writer's son Otto von Kotzebue (1787-1846) who had been on the little-known Russian first circumnavigation of the world (1803-06) and then led further Pacific Ocean exploration in 1815-18 and 1823-26. The book in question concerns the Russian 1815-18 Pacific Expedition and was duly published in 3 fine volumes in 1821. The letter includes; “…The copper plates with reference to my son’s journey cost 80,000 roubles for the paper alone. Graf Romonzow [Count Nikolai Petrovitch Rumyantsev, 1754-1826, Russia’s former Foreign Minister and the sole sponsor of the 3-year Expedition] is having them engraved in St. Petersburg. I will write the copy for the historical part of the journey, but I do not yet know whether it will be possible to supply this separately in an inexpensive edition.”. Rare item associated with early Pacific Exploration. Cross Reference: AUTOGRAPHS, RUSSIA, U.S.A. - HAWAII (Image)

320   imageNAPOLEONIC WAR PERIOD - PROOF OF HAND-COLOURED P.O. PACKET SHIPS' HAND-COLOURED FLAGS; Remarkable and very fine "1 January 1811" foolscap sheet (four neat horizontal folds enable it to fit on an album page) with printed text and manuscript days of the week as well as hand-coloured specific signal flags headed "PRIVATE SIGNALS, to be observed between His Majesty's Ships and the Post Office Paquets". These were used to prevent P.O. Packet ships being inadvertently attacked by 'friendly fire'. The codes were regularly changed in different oceans/areas. This example is endorsed "Proof" on the reverse, which may explain why it has survived. Packet Captains were under strict instructions to throw these code-sheets overboard along with their mail bags (weighed down with a canon ball!) in the event of their ship being in danger of capture. Rare and most attractive.Cross Reference: MILITARY - NAPOLEONIC WAR (Image)
