NAPLES - 1d NAVAL CONCESSION RATE COVER WITH STITCH-MARKS FOR AN ATTACHED 1d COIN; Unusual (somewhat dusted, peripheral faults,
etc.) 3 May 1840 EL from an ordinary seaman that was headed & countersigned for the 1d Concession Rate for “William Taylor on board H.M.S. Benbow, Naples” and addressed to London. It went in a closed Naval Bag to London where it was marked with a
black (in error for red) manuscript “1” marking (1d postage prepaid) and this was authenticated by the red London “PAID” cds (1 June) on the front. The contents show that the writer had “this afternoon returned from Malta, as I was one of the Crew
that boar[d]ed a Prize while the Ship was cruising off Cicila [Sicily]… [we] had to take her to Malta… and the ships that was cruising/blockading – the Benbow, Beleraphon and Jaseur, with two French liners, is anchored off Naples… I wondered that you
did not write to me as the expense is only one Penny [the Concession Rate]… we expected to go to China to fight there, but there is no such chance… the Steamer is now starting with the Mail…”. There are clear sewing holes visible at the bottom left
of the address panel where a 1d coin had been sewn on by the sender to ensure that it qualified fro the prepaid 1d Concession Rate. If sent by ordinary mail from Italy, it would have cost at least 1s-7d!! [Ex Gavin Fryer, 2024; illustrated in his
Printed Papers book, p.533.] [Ex Cavendish 26 Jan. 2006 auction; lot 241, realised £1,200+BP for 5 covers inc. this & another similar 1d-rate cover.] Cross Reference: MALTA, ITALIAN STATES, NAVAL MAIL (Image)
