Most value in the Spanish section, c.100-200 being 1936-9 Civil War period ex both Nationalist & Republican areas inc. EARLY LETTER - SYRIA ("ALLEPPO") TO "TRIPOLI (LEBANON) WITH MERCHANT SYMBOL WAFER SEAL & STRING; Neat 14 Mar. 1484 EL (internal stain & faults to flap, but folds neatly to display internal heading alongside the address panel) written in unusually legible Italian by a Venetian merchant, clearly dated & headed from "Alleppo" inside, addressed to another merchant in "Tripoli", but also having an unusually fine intact wafer seal (with string attached) having a clear "U/+" merchant's symbol. FRENCH POSTAL RATE ("PORT UN SOL") OR FREE CARRIER ("QUITE DE PORT") LETTERS; Fine Feb./Apr. 1639 pair of small ELs (each with small red wax seal on the front) from "Plancoet" (Brittany) to "Paris" (some 250 miles) endorsed with the high postal rate "Port un sol" (one shilling due for carriage), or from "Rennes" to "Fougerres" (32 miles away) endorsed "quite de port" (nothing to pay on delivery) respectively. Rare pair of letters from the start of the Post Office era (the French mail service was first opened to the public in 1628) showing different ways of sending mail. FRANCE - POSTAGE-FREE ROYAL COURIER MAIL - "MARIN" SIGNED COVER EX PARIS TO LIMOGES; Very fine 16 Feb. 1668 EL (red wax seals of the sender, back & front, where silk 'tie' removed) sent from "Paris" to "Limoges", signed internally and at bottom left of address panel by "[Denis] Marin" the Sun King Louis XIV's Finance Secretary, and addressed to "Monsieur d'Aguesseau, conseiller du Roy en ses conseil & M[aitr]e des requestes, ordre de l'hostel a Limoges". The addressee, Henri d'Aguesseau (1638-1716), was the financial secretary in Limoges from 1666 to 1669. The contents concern taxes and finances.
