Romanian Post, Treaty with Austria; 1875 (Dec 28): Registered Quadruple rate Envelope from Galati to Bordeaux, France, bearing a three-colour mass franking of 1872 Prince Carol Paris print with 25 bani orange
(eleven on front and three on reverse), 10 bani blue (eleven on reverse) and 5 bani bistre, tied by GALATI datestamp (Kiriac fig 643), two examples tied in addition by "RECOMANDÉE / No / GALATZ" handstamp (Kiriac fig 1596). Italic
"P.D" and French Chargé as well as indistinct French "AUTR. AVRICOURT" entry cds in blue alongside. The reverse with PARIS arrival cds in red. A spectacular franking of 465 bani, one of only two covers known with this highest
pre-GPU franking of Romania, paying correctly four times the 75 bani letter rate to France plus four times the 35 bani French registration fee and in addition 25 bani for the Romanian registration fee. In addition a waste of money as
France joined the GPU only four days later on 1st January 1876 when this letter would have to be franked with four times 30 bani plus 20 bani registration fee. As to be expected, the mass franking with some imperfections to be
ignored, nevertheless a most interesting piece of postal history at the eve of the General Postal Union, illustrated in Edition d'Or volume 72 on page 146, signed Calves. (Image 1)
