1982 cover imageGreek Consular Post Offices, Ibraila; 1863 (April 27): Cover sent
unpaid to Athens, struck upon despatch with crisp “IBRAILA VLACHIA”
cds in blue, charged with ‘110’ (lepta) in red crayon upon arrival
and franked accordingly with adhesives of the Consecutive Athens
Printing 10 l. yellow-orange, 20 l. blue, and 80 l. rose-carmine
(Hellas 18,19,22), three fine and fresh adhesives tied by
immaculate ATHENS cds (May 6, both offices Julian calendar),
reverse with PIRAEUS transit cds of the same day. Horizontal file
fold passing the 80 lepta adhesive but not diminishing the
attractiveness and postal history importance of this cover at all,
presumably the most appealing of the few covers from the Greek PO
in Ibraila in existence. Illustrated in Edition d'Or volume 72 on
page 104, signed Vlastos. Note: The Greek offices in Romania and
Sulina existed from 1857 only for few years and were closed as
being ‘redundant and unprofitable’ as noted in the Circular of 26
February 1866 when those in Braila and Galatz were abolished.
Accordingly, only a few cover from Ibraila are in existence, nearly
exclusively belonging to the Durutti correspondence. Reference:
