1433 cover imageBritish Missionary Mail 1862 (Nov 12): Entire letter from Reverend
William Ellis in Antananarivo to Mrs. Higginson (wife of Governor
Higginson) in Mauritius, struck on arrival with straight line "Ship
Letter" in red (Proud SL 11). Original manuscript charge of "8"
pence altered to "6" in red crayon, reverse with "Mauritius"
arrival cds in blue (Dec 22). Interesting contents regarding
Ellis's health and he also states "I send you a little photograph
of my residence which is near the Palace". Scarce, just two letters
from this small correspondence bear the Ship Letter mark in red.
Note: King Radama II invited Reverend William Ellis (1794-1872) of
the London Missionary Society to Madagascar in 1861: thereafter
Ellis developed a highly influential relationship with the King.
The British Consul resented his influence as did the French, not
least over religion. King Radama II tactlessly invited Ellis preach
in Ambohimaga, previously forbidden to outsiders, and this
contributed additional political unrest resulting in the
assasination of Radama II on May 12, 1863. Provenance: Collection
Colonel J.R. Danson, Robson Lowe, London, 4 May 1971, ex lot 1262. (Image 1) (Image 2)

handstamped "BRITISH CONSULAR MAIL / ANTANANARIVO" in red,
initialled in manuscript ink by W.C. Pickersgill, the British
Vice-Consul. Typical corner fault where the stamp was removed from
the letter with minor ironed bend and two age spots mentioned for
full accuracy. This stamp is the discovery example of this great
rarity and is entirely unique. Note: This stamp was first reported
by W.T. Kiepura of California in Robson Lowe's 'Philatelist' in May
1966, although illustrated the commentary on same was erroneous,
the handstamp being red not black. The 3 d. rose with red handstamp
is housed in a private collection and cancelled by blue crayon. It
is surprising that this stamp remains unlisted by Stanley Gibbons. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

"BRITISH VICE-CONSULATE / ANTANANARIVO" in violet, an unused
complete sheet of four, each stamp more or less stained where the
gum would have been placed, two marginal imperfections at base,
otherwise fine. Ex the "San Francisco Find", an extremely rare
multiple Gi = £ 5'200+. Note: In 1899 W.C. Pickersgill, the British
Vice-Consul in Antananarivo, was ailing with "Madagascar Fever" and
was reposted to the milder climes of San Francisco. Despite
loathing "timbro-maniacs", he took with him a small group of
Consular Mail stamps in sheets. These he sold to an unknown dealer
in San Francisco probably upon his arrival but certainly before his
death there on 20 July 1901. The multiples later suffered during
the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. The stamps reappeared many
years later to George Holschauer at a "Westpex" show, fused
together by heat and water from the ensuing fires and fire
fighting, some were saved by an art conservator. (Image 1)

1453 imageBritish Inland Mail 1877: Dated "Chopped Silver Dollar / Trade
Dollar" with United States of America / Three Dollars inscription,
used widely as currency across Asia and Africa, often in short
supply in Madagascar. Asian merchants provided the chop marks
removing small amounts of the silver upon necessity (the coin is
90% silver and 10% copper). Due to the lack of currency, the
British Consulate was forced to return to the use of Trade Dollars.
In 1891, Vice-Consul W.C. Pickersgill the man in charge of the
stamp issue wrote home: "Timbomaniacs are the plague of my life.
The ends of the earth seem full of them. They write from the east
and they write from the west..... To facilitate the payment of
postage I devised a rough and ready equivalent for chopped dollar.
It took the form of a ticket, gummed at one corner only so as to be
easily attached to a letter and as easily removed. The name given
to this make-shift was "Consular Mail Frank". Let me beg you not to
put anybody else upon the track of such odd souvenirs as still
remain to me. It is now upwards of three years sincle their use was
discontinued. The maniacs made such a flutter about them that I was
obliged to revert to Chopped Dollars" - W.C. Pickersgill. (Image 1)
