1889 (Oct. 17): Envelope addressed to Sir Henry Ponsonby, The Castle, Balmoral, Scotland, franked with 1 d. lilac, tied by clear circular datestamp of 17 OC 1889. Reverse bearing remarkable contemporary
manuscript endorsements in blue and red crayon: “Rev. John Mathews – his 3rd son was gored…”, “Asks the Queen to pay his son’s hospital fees”, prominently marked “Private”, and further note: “Regret Sir H.P. is unable to pay his
respect.” An unsolicited petition evidently intercepted and internally annotated within the Royal Household during Queen Victoria’s residence at Balmoral. Horizontal fold across lower portion of the cover, small opening tears and
minor edge wear consistent with handling, light ageing; nevertheless a well-preserved and visually attractive example with the manuscript annotations clear and highly legible. A socially evocative item of Victorian Royal Household
postal history, illustrating the screening of private appeals addressed to the Sovereign. (Image 1)
