Henry Ponsonby, Windsor Castle, franked with 1 d. lilac, tied by
clear Richmond, Surrey "D21" duplex datestamp FE 28 1889, with
Windsor arrival cds on reverse. The cover bears extensive
contemporary manuscript endorsements in red and black ink
including: “Please present my compliments… is happy to inform her
that the 2 (Victoria & Albert) has not suffered from the cold
weather (I don’t know her)”, together with further internal
docketing and handling notations. Some creasing and peripheral wear
with minor ageing consistent with handling; reverse with intact
black wax seal and light soiling; nevertheless a well-preserved for

Windsor Castle, franked with 1 d. lilac, dated 7 April 1889, tied
by Lewes duplex datestamp in black. Reverse with Windsor arrival
(AP 8 89). Front bearing extensive contemporary manuscript
endorsements in red and black ink, including the instruction:
“Would you wish this case to be declined - nothing short of £5
would be of any use, and that not much good I am afraid, decline,”
together with further internal docketing and handling date "ap 10
89". An unsolicited petition evidently intercepted. Some creasing,
damage and peripheral wear, soiling and minor ageing consistent
with handling; nevertheless a preserved and interesting example
with the manuscript annotations clear and highly legible. A

Castle, Balmoral, Scotland, franked with 1 d. lilac, tied by clear
circular datestamp of 17 OC 1889. Reverse bearing remarkable
contemporary manuscript endorsements in blue and red crayon: “Rev.
John Mathews – his 3rd son was gored…”, “Asks the Queen to pay his
son’s hospital fees”, prominently marked “Private”, and further
note: “Regret Sir H.P. is unable to pay his respect.” An
unsolicited petition evidently intercepted and internally annotated
within the Royal Household during Queen Victoria’s residence at
Balmoral. Horizontal fold across lower portion of the cover, small
opening tears and minor edge wear consistent with handling, light
ageing; nevertheless a well-preserved and visually attractive
example with the manuscript annotations clear and highly legible. A
socially evocative item of Victorian Royal Household postal
history, illustrating the screening of private appeals addressed to

from persons unknown to her - return”. An unsolicited gift
evidently submitted to the Royal Household and formally declined.

marks consistent with official processing and archival storage. A
particularly appealing and socially revealing example of late
Victorian Royal Household correspondence, documenting the formal
