4229 cover image1778/1862: Great Britain Stampless Covers to France Exhibition
Collection. A highly attractive and well-structured collection of
Great Britain stampless covers to France, expertly mounted on
thirty-three exhibition pages and comprising 65 examples. The
collection is particularly strong in early material, featuring six
entires from the Anglo-French War period (1778–1783), each struck
with the scarce Marque de Passage “D’A/B” handstamp (Van Der Linden
fig. 871), a rarely encountered and historically significant
marking. The range extends through to the Anglo-French Postal
Convention of 1836, and includes: “D’ANGLETERRE” (2) “ANGLETERRE”
handstamps in black (8) and red (6). Three examples of the red
“A.T.F.” (Angleterre Transit Français) handstamp (VDL 231A). A
particularly strong showing of charge marks, rate variations,
transit and accounting markings is present throughout, together
with a diverse selection of origins and destinations. Also included
is a notable 1851 cover bearing a red “PAID SHIP LETTER SYDNEY”
handstamp, adding further postal-historical interest. Condition
does vary in places. Overall, a fine, well-balanced and neatly
presented study of Anglo-French postal relations, suitable for
exhibition or further expansion. Provenance: Ex John Pitts.
