4159 cover image1864: 1 d. rose-red, plate 179, three singles in combination with
1876 2½ d. rosy mauve, plate 12, two horizontal pairs and two
singles used on an envelope from London to Echigo, Japan (old
province north-central Japan now Niigata), dated 8 November 1878,
tied by the late fee L2 London "76" duplex cancellations in black,
endorsed "Via Brindisi", and addressed to the well known American
linguist Benjamin Smith Lyman. The reverse with Singapore, Hong
Kong transit datestamps (DE 8 1878), Yokohama transit cds (DE 23
1878) and further Japanese arrival markings. The cover additionally
bearing extensive contemporary Japanese manuscript annotations,
together with the original attached paper routing slip inscribed in
characters, applied on arrival by the local postal authorities to
interpret and direct the foreign address within Japan. The envelope
with “Trübner” embossed flap (Publishers & Library Agents), and
showing the usual creasing and signs of handling, the wear
consistent with its long transit. A scarce and visually striking
example of early British mail to Japan, addressed to a historically
significant seaport located on the Sea of Japan, a notably uncommon
destination, with Japanese routing slip applied to facilitate
internal delivery. A characterful triple rate (3x5d. plus triple
late fee of 3d.), demonstrating the complexities of foreign mail
delivery in the treaty port period and following Japan joining the
UPU in 1877. Note: Trübner was a prominent London-based Victorian
publishing house founded by Nicolas Trübner, specialising in
Oriental studies, American literature, and international scholarly
works. Active during the mid-to-late 19th century, the firm was
known for publishing Trübner's American and Oriental Literary
Record and Trübner's Oriental Series. The recipient, Benjamin Smith
Lyman, was an American mining engineer, surveyor, and an amateur
linguist who researched the Japanese language. He was also a
anthropologist, who interestingly also promoted vegetarianism. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

4163 image1860: Proof Sheet with the prepared for use but not issued 1½ d.
rosy-mauve, perf 14, lettered FD, overprinted SPECIMEN (Type 2),
affixed to Die Proof of the 1½ d. lilac rose embossed postal
stationery indicium, die I dated 4.1.60 (131 x 78mm.), likewise
overprinted SPECIMEN (Type 6). A highly instructive composite
'Essay status' sample showing both adhesive and embossed formats
for the unissued/later issued 1½ d. denomination. Note: Just
eighteen such Proof Sheets are recorded in the Karl Louis Card
Index. One of these has a third (unoverprinted) 1 ½ d. rosy-mauve
adhesive attached and is endorsed: “From Mr. Pearson Hill through
the kind request of Miss Parker“ at bottom. This indicates that
these Proof Sheets originate from the Rowland Hill Estate (1879).
Pearson Hill was the son of Rowland Hill, who had close contacts at
the time to the early „pioneer“ collectors. He sold the „philatelic
estate“ of his father in the 1880s and 1890s. Ref: Specimen Stamps
and Stationery of Great Britain, Samuel & Huggins, illustrates a
similar example on page 218, where it is stated these are of Essay
status since this value was not issued until 1872 (Image 1) (Image 2)

the stamps to sunlight. SG DP54a mentions a card in The Postal
Museum with four imperforate examples all handwritten "Specimen" in
black manuscript, two having been exposed to sunlight for 4 days,
the other two kept in the dark. The test resulted in noticeable
fading of the pink shade. Note 2: Just four singles lettered AK,
BK, DK and DL (all without gum and perforations partly cut by
scissors) showing „Specimen“ in manuscript are recorded in the Karl
Louis Card Index. A 5th. Single, lettered BL, is attached to a
proof impression of the embossed die of the Postal Stationery 1½d
rose showing date plugs of 2 April 1860, together with a 1½d rosy
mauve with SPECIMEN handstamp. This is housed in the Philips
collection, N.P.M. London, vol. XXI, page 11. The stamp BK offered
here and the stamp BL on the proof impression card (similar to lot
