4151 cover imageShip Letter to Australia 1856 (1 March): 6 d. mauve, embossed
issue, a fine four-margin example with clear top sheet margin, used
on reduced cover from London to Sydney, endorsed “per Ocean Chief”,
cancelled by London Inland 5 barred oval in black, with red
handstruck “1” denoting the colonial ship letter fee on arrival.
Reverse with London transit (partially indistinct) and fine SYDNEY
/ SHIP LETTER datestamp of OC 24, 1856. Carried by private sailing
vessel at the 6 d. ship letter rate, a particularly attractive
single franking. The 6 d. embossed is rarely found with four clear
margins and especially desirable with marginal at top owing to the
close plate spacing. Some light aging and minor imperfections to
the cover as usual for transoceanic mail of this period, but a
scarce and visually appealing Australia-bound ship letter. Gi = £
