Lancaster despatch cds (30 Jan.) in red on reverse. Closed tear on
obverse well clear of stamp and address, still an an uncommon and

4121 cover image1840: 1 d. black, plate 6, lettered KK, a used example with large
margins on three sides and shaved at upper left, on delightful 1841
Ladies' filigree woven envelope addressed to the Chairman of the
Anti-Corn Law League in Manchester, tied by Maltese Cross in black.
The cover with enclosure (in the same beautiful filigree design)
stating that "Mrs. Philipps' long absence from home has prevented
her returning an earlier answer to the polie invitation from the
Anti-Corn law Association to become a member of the Ladies
committee...". Top back flap missing but with part Reigate or
Ramsgate despatch cds and complete Manchester cds (Oct 13) in black
of arrival. A rare and most attractive usage, only five embossed
fancy envelopes franked with 1840, One Penny blacks are recorded in
the Karl Louis Card Index. Cert. Holcombe (1991). Provenance:
