65“, via „LONDON 11 MY 65“, „MARSEILLE 13 MAI 65“ and „CIVITAVECCIA
15 MAG 65“. After six months, the letter was again re-addressed
„1st. address Ireland“, and handstamped on arrival in „LONDON DE 8
65“ on front, boxed „SENT BACK TO ENGLAND / WITHOUT A REASON / FOR
NON DELIVERY“ and „H.& K. PACT. DE 9 1865“ datestamp on reverse. A
very rare Mixed Issues Franking, not recorded in ‚Mixed Franking
Covers‘ by Ray Simpson & Karl Louis (2020), and the third such

straw, plate 2, LD, tied with irish „410 – SLIGO OC 13 1862“ duplex
cancellations to Registered entire carried via Belgium to Venice.
The postage to Venetia via Belgium & Aachen/Prussia would have been
only 6d. per half ounce weight plus 6d. registered fee. The letter
was certainly franked for another routing but „Via Amburgo“
(Hamburg) as indicated in ms. in the top left corner was not
possible. It might have been franked as a double rate letter for
the „France & Italy“ route at 1s4d plus 11d. registered fee. A very
rare use of the 1862, 9d. bistre in combination with the 1856 issue
(without corner letters), outstanding appearance and an amazing
Irish Forerunner! Reference: Listed in „Victorian Mixed Franking
Covers“ by Ray Simpson & Karl Louis (2020), page 145. Provenance:

„MARKETHILL AU 19 1843“ (Ireland) paid „10“ pence in cash through
France to the Sardinan border, addressed to Nice (part of Sardinia
until 1859), charged „12“ to the recipient on delivery, and
stampless REGISTERED entire from „NORTHSHIELDS DE 6 1850“ fully
paid in cash (1s1d letter rate + 1s2d. registeration fee = 2s3d).
An attractive and interesting trio of covers for early prepaid
resp. part prepaid mail to the Kingdom of Sardinia. (Image 1)

with wmk. Medium Garter, 1856, 1d. red-brown, RD and SH and 1855,
2d. blue, plate 5, BD and BE, cancelled with „498 – MANCHESTER JU 5
1856“ duplex cancellations to lettersheet via France to Torino,
Sardinia. The two 6d. cut to shape but mostly good margins, a faint
horizontal filing crease through one 6d and 2d, otherwise good and
very fresh preserved, The letter was fully paid (1s.8d) to
destination, but is overpaid with 2d. (Late Fee?). A very rare and
highly attractive combination of adhesives printed with all three
different printing methods used to produce British postage stamps
in the 19th. century: Line engraved, Embossed and Surface printing.
The only such four-colour-mixed-franking recorded in the K. Louis
Card Index, cert. K. Louis (2023). Provenance: Heinrich Köhler

not exceeding 1 ounce weight (3s.4d. plus 1d Late fee) from London
„L.S. 30 OC 1855“ via France to Genoa, a very unusual and rare high
franking with adhesives produced with all three different printing
methods for British postage stamps in the 19th. century: Line
engraved, Embossed and Surface printing. Only one other such
franking combination of 41d. recorded in the K. Louis Card Index,
of which this is the only one addressed to Italy! Provenance:
