4045 image1840: William Mulready Postal Stationery 1d. black, a front
dispatched from Ireland marked in ms. „June 22, 1840“, Dublin „PAID
JU 24 1840“ datestamp and „1/6“ indicating 1 shilling 6 pence is
additionally paid in cash, routed via London, Calais, Pt.
Beauvoisin, Florence to Naples with „A.G.D.P.“ (Agenzia Generale
delle Poste) entry marking. Postage 1s.7d. fully paid to the
French-Italian border, (1s.6d. in cash, 1d paid by the Mulready
envelope or lettersheet) from there treated unpaid and 31 grana
charged on delivery in Naples. Few re-backed marginal tears,
otherwise very fresh and a very rare foreign destination usage of a
Mulready envelope or lettersheet. Just five usages to Italian
States recorded in the Karl Louis Card Index, of which this is the
only recorded to Naples. Cert. K. Louis BPP (2023). Provenance:
1998, listed as item „No.20“ by R.C.E.Compton in “Mulreadys to
Overseas Destinations“, GB Journal March/April 1998, page 33, with

1840“, paid „1/7“ in cash confirmed by „PAID DE 25 1840“ tombstone
datestamp in red via Calais, Pt.Beauvoisin, Genova and Leghorn. It
must have been among the first times that postal clerks along the

five, CH-CL, margins in places, tied by „466“ numerals to
lettersheet from „LIVERPOOL MR 13 1849“ via Savoy, Sardinia and
Tuscany to Naples. Full prepayment to Naples was impossible at the
time, 5d. paid the postage to the French entry port of Calais, the
balance (23 grana in ms.) was charged to the addressee on delivery.
Very rare, just three 5d part payment frankings to the Kingdom of
Naples are recorded in the Karl Louis Card Index, of which this is

transit on reverse) to Naples. The postage was 1s. 9d. (= 21d.)
prepaid to the Sardinian border, charged 23 grana to be paid by the
recipient on delivery in Naples. Very rare franking, one of just
three covers with this 10d+10d+1d franking to the Italian States
recorded in the Karl Louis Card Index, of which this is by far the

Fee. The 1s. with cut wing margin, the 4d. with rounded corner, the
lettersheet incomplete on reverse, nevertheless an attractive and

„PAID / 22 AU 22 / 1840“ tombstone on entire dispatched from
„MANCHESTER AU 21 1840“ via London, Calais and Pt. di Beauvoisin to
Leghorn. Red „1/7“ (1s.7d. paid in cash as per the 1838 French
convention), the 1d. black was possibly applied by the sender
hoping in error the adhesive might pay the inland postage to the
French border, the letter weighed 6 denari (ms. in upper left
corner), 18 crazie to be paid by the recipient on delivery. One of
the earliest usages of the First Postage Stamp of the World on mail

Louis BPP (2023). Note: The famous poets Elizabeth Barrett Browning
(1806-1861) and Robert Browning (1812-1889) had married in 1846,
moved the same year to Florence and lived on the first floor of the
