4089 cover image1862: 1 shilling green, plate 1, lettered TF, variety: „Watermark
„Emblems“ Error – Three Roses and a Thistle“ tied with „466 –
LIVERPOOL 24 MY 64“ duplex obliteration to entire to Palermo,
Kingdom of Italy. A New Find of this exceedingly rare Watermark
variety, due to a Shamrock „bit“ having become detached from the
dandy roll and being incorrectly replaced by a Rose. Until 2013
(see Stanley Gibbons GB Queen Victoria Specialised Catalogue, 16th.
Edition, page 183), this watermark variety was only known on the 6d
plate 3, the 9d plate 2 and plate 4 with corner letters TF, but not
on the 1862, 1 shilling green, TF. The Stanley Gibbons British
Commonwealth catalogue meanwhile has listed this watermark variety
(but unpriced), since two poorly preserved singles were reported in
May 2013 (with London „12“ barred numeral obliteration) resp.
certificated in 2014 by P.T.S. (with „75“ Birmingham obliteration).
This 1s. green, TF, used on cover is a recent New Find, the only
known usage of the variety on cover, and by far the finest
recorded. Cert. Karl Louis BPP (2025). (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
