1420 cover imageFrench Occupation of Castellorizo 1915/1921: Anchor Cancels on
French Levant Issues. A superb and scarce group of four covers and
cover fronts relating to the French occupation of Castellorizo,
mounted and fully written up on album pages. The selection
prominently features the distinctive anchor datestamps
“CASTELLORIZO / (CORPS) OCCUPATION FRANÇAISE”, both with and
without the inscription “1 ARMÉE NAVALE”, struck in blue, black,
magenta, and violet on stamps of the French Levant. The variety of
colours and inscriptions provides an excellent comparative study of
these striking and highly sought-after occupation markings.
Condition shows the usual imperfections associated with military
and occupation mail of this turbulent period, though the strikes
are clear and visually impressive. A scarce and desirable assembly
from a short-lived French occupation, rarely encountered in such
cohesive and well-presented form. Provenance: Ex John Pitts. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4) (Image 5)
