1689 **/*/piece/cover/(*) image1918 Hand Overprints Specialised & Certified Exhibition Collection.
A unique and highly specialised collection of the 1918 Hand
Overprints, attractively presented on twenty-six display leaves and
comprising 200 stamps, over 40 pieces, and 4 covers. The study
begins with the first trial overprint and continues with examples
from each of the six handstamps employed, providing a comprehensive
overview of the hand-applied overprint issues. While letterpress
forgeries are well known and widely encountered, forgeries of the
handstamp overprints are comparatively scarce. The material offered
here has been carefully identified and expertised, with items
signed or endorsed by Oliva or Diena, and described accordingly,
including a selection of forgeries; a significant assurance of
authenticity in this complex field. The collection includes hand
overprints on the Hungarian “Reapers,” Parliament, Charity, and
Karl & Zita issues, represented both mint and used, with numerous
examples on piece and a small selection of covers. The breadth of
material allows for detailed comparison of handstamps, settings,
and usages. A remarkable, self-contained and authoritative
assembly, rarely encountered in such depth and ideal for specialist
study or exhibition. Note: Oliva and Diena worked in collaboration
with the late Roy Dehn, who, during the 1950s–1960s, assembled much
of the material now written up in this collection. Provenance: Ex

comprehensive study of the 1918 Machine Overprints, attractively
presented on 19 display pages and covering both Type I and Type II
settings, together with 9 covers demonstrating commercial usage.
The collection includes a strong range of listed varieties,
notably: missing “I” in “FIUME”, double overprints, including one
oblique pair (Sassone 24ca). Of particular significance is a 10 kr.
fine used example (Sassone € 8’000), accompanied by a Mihály
certificate. Also included is a folded sheet of 100 of Sassone 26
with original gum; an impressive and rarely encountered survival.
The Type II section is especially strong on postage dues, with an
excellent range of examples, most signed by Oliva, providing
important expert validation in this heavily forged field. Condition
is mainly fine, with only the occasional minor imperfection as to
be expected. A valuable and well-constructed specialised assembly

detailed and chronologically arranged study of the 1919 Pictorial
Series key values, presented on forty-three display pages and
covering all five issues. The collection comprises unused and used
material throughout, with many larger multiples, blocks, and no
fewer than 19 complete sheets. First Issue (Paper “A”), includes a
sheet of the key values 10 c. and 20 c., together with a half sheet
showing the variety “Triple Perforation” at top; a striking and
scarce production flaw. Second Issue (Paper “B”), features a 5 c.
part sheet (61 of 70) displaying horizontal double rows of
perforations, creating the notable variety of a vertical pair with
double perforation at centre. Third Issue (Paper “C”), strong in
multiples of the key 20 c., 5 c., and 10 c. values, including
complete sheets of the 5 c. and 10 c. unused with original gum.
Also present are rare 10½ perforation examples signed Oliva,
vertical pairs imperforate at centre, and the perforation variety
resulting in the inscription “Fiume” missing (Martinas certificate,
Sassone C33/Ikb). Fourth Issue “POSTA FIUME”, includes the rare 25
c. 10½ perforation, endorsed by Oliva. Fifth Issue Overprints on
the Fiume Issue, highlighted by the scarce 5 on 45 c. arancia
(Oliva certificate), together with additional varieties and
overprint studies on the Posta Fiume issues. In addition, the
collection contains a number of described forgeries and duplicates
for comparison and study. A thoroughly researched and

written-up collection of the Military Post issues, presented on
thirty-three display pages and covering the complex Legionary
period in depth. The opening section provides historical context,
illustrating both the beginning and end of the occupation, and
includes: the Ronchi bronze medal awarded by Gabriele D’Annunzio to
the legionaries who occupied Fiume on 12 September 1919, a complete
set of the six labels depicting D’Annunzio’s effigy, issued prior
to the capitulation to the Italian Navy in December 1920, the Fiume
d’Italia issues are represented by unused and used sets, with
forgeries carefully identified and illustrated for comparison. The
Reggenza Italiana del Carnaro (Italian Regency of Carnaro) section
includes: 20 c. and 25 c. essays (certificate Raybaudi), unused set
including the key value (signed Diena), issued stamps including the
three top values, important varieties, notably Sassone 146A (five
examples, two signed Oliva), inverted overprints, and
imperforate-between pairs, the November 1920 new printing, all
signed by either Diena or Oliva, express stamps are included, with
used examples such as the 10 lire, narrow setting. Specialised
material extends to printing plates for the Military series, and a
remarkable Fiume d’Italia stamp cut from a block of six with “POSTE
DI FIUME” substituted — a striking and unusual item. The ARBE and
VEGLIA first overprinted issues are represented both unused and
used for each island (many signed), including notable varieties
such as vertical pairs with the upper stamp without overprint
(ARBE). Official cards with large overprints of ARBE and VEGLIA,
signed by the heads of the Military Post, are also present,
alongside small overprints for both islands, again with forgeries
identified and described. Condition is, in the main, fresh and
fine. A comprehensive and expertly curated study of the Military

Roy Dehn’s Original Forgery Reference Collection with original
working reference collection and manuscript studies of Fiume
forgeries, comprising his Index Falsorum and A Comparative Study of
Forgeries; an exceptional insight into one of the most complex and
heavily forged areas of European philately. Three "fantasy
overprints are shown followed by five forged hand-stamps. Machine
overprint forgeries are particularly prolific in the Fiume field,
and Dehn systematically presents and describes no fewer than 32
examples. The Index Falsorum further documents forged postage dues,
fabricated double and inverted overprints, forged “Reapers” and
Parliament issues, examples of the missing “I” in “FIUME”, and
concludes with three forgery types of the 20 f. postage due
overprinted with bar “FRANCO” and “45”. The accompanying
Comparative Study of Forgeries, compiled by Dehn and demonstrating
his advanced knowledge of the subject as early as 1965, was awarded
a Silver Medal at the British Philatelic Exhibition 1965
(certificate included). Although a number of stamps have been
removed over time, Dehn’s original manuscript annotations
identifying and analysing the forgeries remain intact, preserving
the integrity and research value of the study. Also present are
genuine examples, including: 5 f. Reaper, handstamp Type II (signed

Exhibition Collection. A well-researched and attractively
illustrated assembly, presented on twenty-seven exhibition pages,
comprising 30 covers, a number of pieces, and a representative
selection of Austrian stamps spanning the period 1850–1870. The
collection opens with an exceptional 1600 entire from Fiume to the
Commander of the Garrison of the Carso (the high ground between
Fiume and Trieste). The contents include a request for 200
arquebusiers (foot soldiers) to march day and night to defend Fiume
against marauders; an evocative and historically significant early
military letter. A strong range of pre-stamp material follows,
tracing postal development through to the commencement of the
Austrian period. Among the highlights is an interesting letter from
Fiume to Sisak franked with eight examples of the 1 kr. (one stamp
removed). The Austrian stamp section includes a fine selection of
cancellations, many very fine strikes, notably: 1850 6 kr. Type I,
hand-made paper, showing a plate flaw, cancelled by the Fiume
registered “RECOMMENDIRT” oval serpent handstamp, signed by E.
Diena and accompanied by a MATL certificate. Also, 1867 25 kr. and
50 kr., both signed by Ferchenbauer. Condition varies, as to be
expected with early material, but the collection is overall
well-presented and of considerable postal-historical and philatelic
interest. An impressive and characterful assembly spanning over
three centuries of postal history, offering both exhibition merit
and further scope for expansion. Provenance: Ex John Pitts. 1700 cover image1870/1919: Postal Stationery and cover collection. An extensive and
attractively presented collection of early postal stationery and
covers, mounted on 59 display pages and comprising a substantial
accumulation of cards, including picture postcards and photo cards.
The collection features a strong range of cancellations, including
scarce boxed Fiume strikes and several Travelling Post Office
datestamps “FIUME–ZAGRAB” (64SZ & 63SZ). A wide variety of
destinations is represented, including Germany, Switzerland,
Austria, and Bosnia, illustrating Fiume’s international postal
connections. Adhesive issues include the 1 May issue values of 2
kr., 5 kr., 10 kr., and 15 kr. Among the notable items are: an
inbound Great Britain cover from Cardiff Bute Docks to Fiume with
scarce Fiume arrival, a registered picture postcard depicting three
bank robbers of the Bank of Fiume alongside one of their captors,
World War I censorship material, registered censored mail to
Switzerland, Red Cross correspondence, express mail, including
registered express to Budapest, a range of parcel cards to Berlin,
Constantinople, and Vienna, condition is somewhat mixed in places,
as to be expected with postal stationery and commercial usages of
the period, though overall the material is highly presentable. A
visually engaging and wide-ranging assembly, rich in postal history
interest, and well suited for exhibition or further specialised
development. Provenance: Ex John Pitts. 1701 cover image1918/1919: Postal History Specialised Exhibition Collection. A
well-researched and attractively presented postal history
collection mounted on sixteen exhibition pages, comprising 31
covers illustrating the turbulent transitional period of 1918–1919.
Of particular note is a scarce cover postmarked 17 November 1918,
cancelling Hungarian stamps overprinted “SHS / HRVATSKA”; one of
only a handful of recorded examples. The collection displays a
strong range of single and combination frankings, including
registered and express mail from Post Offices 1, 2, 3, 5, and two
examples from Post Office 6. Also included are postage dues and
five bisect usages. Additional highlights include: four covers
marked undelivered, two with German instructional markings, one in
Serbo-Croat, all relating to the postal strike in Vienna. Of
particular interest are two covers that raise questions regarding
postal integrity, including one bearing a forgery of the 20 f.
postage due label with “FRANCO 45” overprint, accompanied by its
postal receipt; a remarkable and revealing survival. A carefully
assembled and thoroughly annotated exhibit-ready collection,
combining rarity, controversy, and significant transitional postal
history. Provenance: Ex John Pitts. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4) (Image 5) (Image 6) (Image 7) (Image 8) (Image 9) (Image 10) (Image 11) (Image 12) (Image 13) (Image 14) (Image 15) (Image 16) (Image 17) (Image 18) (Image 19)
