1861 (Feb 14): Province Napoletane 2 gr. blue, a single example and a horizontal pair with good to large margins, well embossed, each adhesive tied by light boxed ANNULLATO in rare red ink (Sassone R1), on
registered Entire letter to Aquila, front struck by "PARTENZA DA NAPOLI 19 FEB 1861" despatch cds and straight-line ASSICURATA handstamp, both in the same red ink like the obliterator. A fine letter full of postal history interest,
signed Asinelli & Alberto Diena Sassone = € 500 + 17'500. Note: These Province Napoletane adhesives were used only five days after their issue, but the cover was despatched in February 1861, i.e. prior to the introduction of
the new rates during the Luogotenenza of Eugenio di Savoia coming into force in March 1861. This early Province franking pays therefore correctly the old Bourbonic rate of 3 grana for 1½ sheets, doubled for registration, but using
the new Sardinian style adhesives, a combination possible only in the last two weeks of February 1861. The letter was directed to Giuseppe Pietropaoli the former Syndaco of Aquila. (Image 1)
