bearing 1864 oval type 2 sk. blue and a pair of 16 sk. grey-olive

in the Danish-English mailbag to Auckland, bearing 1870 bi-coloured
2 sk. blue & grey print 2b and pair 16 sk. print 1 (AFA 16+20), the
16 sk. pair with irregular perforation due to its position at the
cover's edge, the adhesives tied by '92' numeral with matching
SKJELSKØR despatch cds and LONDON transit cds alongside. Reverse

The 34 sk. franking paid the rate to New Zealand via Great Britain
in force between 1 November 1865 and 31 December 1874, the sea
postage of "6d" was noted in red crayon on the obverse. Envelope
stained, but a rare destination as in total only 14 letters with

Some toning on the stamps and tear in envelope below, nevertheless
still in great condition for an early franked Danish cover to the

923 cover imagePostal routes to the United States; 1866 (Feb 19): Double rate
Cover from Copenhagen with Closed Mail via Prussia and Ostende to
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, endorsed "via Liverpool", bearing a
three-colour franking of 1864 oval type 2 sk. blue, 4 sk. carmine
in a strip of three, and 16 sk. grey-brown, three pairs on obverse
and reverse, one pair glued over the cover's edge and separated
when the cover was opened for display, other adhesives glued to the
edge and their perforation thereby flattened (AFA 11+13+15), each
adhesive cancelled by '1' numeral with matching KIØBENHAVN despatch
cds in black, reverse with oval KIØBENHAVN 'delay' datestamp and
"LÜBECK - LAUENBURG" T.P.O. datestamp in blue. "AACHEN / PAID 46
Cts" credit cds struck in part on two adhesives, indistinct "N.
YORK Br. PKT. 30 PAID" cds of the exchange office alongside, both
in red. The weiterfranko of '24' silbergroschen beyond Denmark is
noted on obverse in red crayon, reverse with "wf20"
(silbergroschen) in blue crayon indicating the prepaid Sea and US
postage. An impressive franking to pay the 110 skilling double rate
in force between 1 August 1865 and 9 July 1866. The perforation
issues do not distract at all from the overall attractiveness of
this unique and truly spectacular cover, one of the most
spectacular skilling covers to the USA being the only recorded
example of the 110 sk. rate. Provenance: Siegel sale 858, lot 3030;

932 cover imageIntro to this section (take it outside of the lot text): The following lots originate from the P. Fabricius Jensen and Jørgen Jørgensen collection of postal history during the 1864 Danish-German (Prussian) war. The items have not been on the market for many decades. The exhibit and collection focusses on relating the covers to the history of the war. Many historically significant pieces are included, and since the war lasted less than 1 year only and because the postal situation changed very frequently, many items are extraordinarily scarce, and it will most likely be decades before a similar opportunity will come on the market. Many items show postal treatments, historical aspects, cancellation combinations, and/or ratings only recorded in a few examples (in many cases less than 5 or 10 recorded). The collection has been split up into more or less chronological sub-topics which tell small stories about the war by themselves. The majority of these items were sent to/from soldiers, some were smuggled across enemy lines, and generally the times were challenging. Therefore, the condition of the philatelic documentation of this war varies from very fine to stained and defective. This is to be expected in these lots, but many of the items are not known to exist in better condition. The 1864 Danish-German war; Prelude and outbreak of the war; 1863 July - 1864 Dec: Interesting Selection of 15 letters and four documents; incl. three covers to the Danish army in Holstein from July to December 1863 bearing single examples (2) or pair of the 1858 or 1863-issue 4 sk. brown adhesives with July cover from Rønnede to the 8th battalion in Kiel and two covers to the 1st batallion in Rendsburg; three documents / formulars with call-up content; two covers after the occupation of Holstein by Prussian and Austrian troops in December 1863 with 1863 (Dec 30) cover from WANDSBECK to Sønderborg with numeral '146', and 1864 (Jan 10) cover from the new post office of Rendsburg with numeral '194' after the P.O. had been evacuated on the Slesvig part of the city; original circular related to the visit of King Christian IX at the Danish troops at Dannevirke, issued at the day the German troops had crossed the border to Slesvig; eight covers showing usage of Danish postmarks in parts of Holstein and Slesvig after occupation by German troops, with five usages of Danish 4 skilling adhesives in Friedrichstadt to Föhr, Bredstedt, Glückstadt, Rendsburg, Wilster, these three with the latest use of their respective '116', '54', and '147' numerals, cover with Holstein 1¼ sch. cour. used in Brunsbüttel and tied by Danish '140' numeral, cover with Hamburg 2½ sch. tied by Danish '2' numeral and cash paid parcel letter from Hamburg to Ahrensburg; also two covers from the siege of Fredericia when its post office moved to Strib, Funen.
