899 cover imagePostal routes via the GAPU to France; 1865 (July 16): Envelope with
Combined prepayment from Copenhagen to Mèze, Hérault, bearing a
superb three-colour franking of 1854/57 dotted spandrels 2 sk.
blue, 4 sk. brown, and 16 sk. grey-violet, three fine and fresh
examples with even large margins, cancelled by '1’ numeral,
matching KJØBENHAVN despatch cds in black and French "PRUSSE
FORBACH" entry cds in red alongside. The 4 sk. stamp tied in
addition by framed "P.D." handstamp in red. Backstamp of the Danish
HAMBURG P.O. and a plethora of French post offices and ambulants.
Front and reverse of cover separated and re-united, long tear in
the upper part of the front, nevertheless a most appealing and
interesting item, a rate enigma. Note: Between 1 April 1862 and 31
July 1865 a single rate of 28 sk. was in force. Following a new
postal convention with Prussia, a rate of 23 skilling for letters
weighing up to 10 grams to France was thereafter in force between 1
August 1865 and 31 January 1868. This letter is sent 15 days before
the 23 sk. rate came into effect, is franked with 22 sk. and has a
PD cancellation. As the cover was struck with a PD handstamp the
difference to one of these rates must have been paid in cash.
However, the cash payment was not noted on the cover. One
possibility is that 6 sk. were paid in cash in the older rate, but
that explanation would be difficult to imagine as a 8 sk. stamp
instead of the 2 sk. stamp would have paid the correct rate.
Alternatively the residual 3 skilling were paid in cash in a
premature usage of the newer rate by the sender, again an odd
usage. Cert. Debo BPP (1981). Provenance: Collection Gene Scott,

900 cover imagePostal routes via Belgium to France; 1867 (Nov 1): Cover of the
tenth weight rate from Saxkjøbing to Paris, bearing a spectacular
franking of 1864 oval type 3 sk. lilac in a strip of three and 16
sk. greenish dark grey, a single example and two horizontal strips
of four and five examples, respectively, all comb perf. 13x12½ (AFA
12+15), fine examples with fresh colour, the 16 skilling multiples
separated from the sheet by scissor cuts, each adhesive tied by
‘62’ numeral, matching SAXKJØBING cds, “P.D.” handstamp in red and
French “PRUSSE ERQUELINES” entry cds (Nov 4) in blue alongside,
HAMBURG backstamp. Correctly paid with 169 skilling equal to 40
silbergroschen split with 5 sgr. for Denmark, 10 sgr. for Germany
and 25 sgr. for France, a rate being in force between 1 August 1865
and 31 January 1868. The weiterfranco of ‘35’ silbergroschen beyond
Denmark is noted on front and reverse in blue crayon. Few 16
skilling adhesives at right with staining and wrinkles, one damaged
by strong vertical filing fold, nevertheless the only franking in
this exceptionally high weight and rate. Note: Directed to Ernst
Johann Albrecht von Bertouch (1821-1904), who was appointed in 1856
Chamberlain by the Danish King. He later served as a Prussian civil
servant in Wiesbaden and was appointed Royal Prussian Privy
Councilor and Chamberlain. Provenance: Nellemann & Thomsen sale 93,

postal administration credited 9 kreuzer to the GAPU and 5 kreuzer

some toning at right, one of only two recorded Danish letters to
Switzerland partly prepaid to the border. Note: The letter is
directed to Henri Louis Frédéric de Saussure (1829 – 1905), a Swiss

with Saussure's work "Études sur la Famille des Vespides. 1.
Monographie des Guêpes solitaires, ou de la Tribu des Euméniens",
published in 1852 and was written by Christian Drewsen (1799 –

of the Strandmøllen paper mill, in his spare time he studied the
local insects, collected specimens from around the world, and
donated them to the Copenhagen University's Zoological Museum.
