942 cover imageThe 1864 Danish-German war; Norwegian Volunteer fighting on the
Danish side; 1864 (May 6/11): Most interesting duo of two envelopes
with full content sent back home to Christiania, the first one sent
from the "FELTPOST No 1 6/5" office while it was located in Assens,
the second from the normal post office in "ASSENS 11/5", both
delivered by CHRISTIANIA BYPOST on 13 & 15 May 1864. Reverse with
transit cds's of KIØBENHAVN and NYBORG, respectively as well as of
SANDØSUND. Both charged 12 Norwegian skilling postage due. Modern
red tusch notations on front about the sender and the date of the
interesting content. The letter content of the first cover is
written on a very nice stationery showing an illustration of a
soldier. Mail from Norwegian volunteers back to Norway during the

949 cover imageThe 1864 Danish-German war; Prisoner of War mail; 1864 (April 18):
Exceptional and historically most important Prisoner of War letter
written the day after The Battle of Dybbøl / Düppeler Schanzen, and
in which the captured soldier describes the battle and his capture

hand account of the Battle of Dybbøl, the earliest recorded example
of the German language "FLENSBURG 20 4 64" cancellation, as it is
probably one of world’s smallest POW letters, and as it was
delivered by Footpost / Fodpost to Ballerup near Copenhagen.
Postage due 2 sch. courant crossed out in Copenhagen and converted
to 6 sk. charged from the receiver paying the rate for an unpaid
domestic letter. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
