Postal routes via Belgium to France; 1858 (Sept 14): Entire letter from Copenhagen to Marseille, bearing 1854/57 dotted spandrels 2 sk. blue, 8 sk. green, and a horizontal strip of four 16 sk. grey-violet, with
margins from shaved to large, the multiple touched at lower right, tied by light strikes of ‘181’ numeral, matching "SJAELL:POST.SPED:BUREAU" railway cds and "P.D." in black as well as French "TOUR-T. VALENCIENNES" entry cds in red alongside, reverse with HAMBURG and PARIS transit, French T.P.O. as well as MARSEILLE arrival (Sept 18) cds's. Leftmost stamp of the multiple crossed by vertical filing fold, tears in entire at base and top between adhesives,
nevertheless an interesting letter to France franked by the sender with 74 skilling, a rate thought to be necessary for a second weight letter, overpaid for the second weight rate by 27 skilling, for the first weight rate by 37 skilling. The Danish postal administration noted only a weiterfranko of 6½ sgr. in red crayon for the German, Belgian and French part of the journey, thus this was only a first weight rate entire. The only recorded letter to France
franked with this totally miscalculated 74 skilling rate, a desirable item with an impressive provenance, cert. Nielsen (2004). Note: Due to the different weight progressions for the non-French part of the journey (15 grams per
weight class) and the French part of the journey (7.5 grams per weight class), calculating the correct rate was a difficult task even for postal officers. This entire letter, however was not despatched at a post office but thrown by
the sender in the postbox of a train at the Copenhagen - Korsør railway line. He added a franking of which he thought would pay the correct double rate of twice 37 skilling, i.e. 74 skilling. In the rate in force between 15 July
1854 and 31 March 1862 the correct rate to France beyond the departments at the border was however 37 skilling for a letter with a weight up to ½ lod (first rate in Denmark and France) or 47 skilling for a letter with a weight between
½ up to 1 lod (first rate in Denmark and second rate in France). Therefore the 74 skilling franking does neither match the first, (37 sk.) nor the second (47 sk.) nor the third weight rate (83 sk.). Provenance: Højland sales 10,
