863 cover imagePostal Routes to the GAPU, Bergedorf; 1857 (Sept 24): Cover from
Aabenraa to Bergedorf, bearing 1854/57 dotted spandrels 4 sk.
brown, touched at base and right, tied by '6.' numeral with
matching AABENRAA despatch cds alongside, "K.D.O.P.A HAMBURG"
backstamp and Hamburg Botenpost "F.P. 25/9" of the following day,
BERGEDORF arrival backstamp (Sept 26). The rate for letters from
the second Danish Rayon to Bergedorf was 4 sk. plus 3 Schilling
Courant postage due in force between 15 July 1854 to 30 Sep 1857,
the due was noted in red crayon on front. For some not fully
understood reason, some Bergedorf covers franked with 4 sk. and
originating in Danish Rayon 2 are charged 1.5 Schilling Courant and
others are charged 3 Schilling Courant. Reference: Shown by Elisa

864 cover imagePostal Routes to the GAPU, Hamburg; 1873 (March 29): Envelope for a
parcel weighing 37 pounds, despatched from Skive to Hamburg,
bearing a four-colour franking of 1870 bi-coloured 2 sk. print 5, 3
sk. print 3, 8 sk. print 2 and three single examples of 48 sk. (AFA
16+17+19+21), the 3 and 8 sk. stamps with rounded corners, the rare
48 skilling adhesives faultless except for the usual fading of the
colours, tied by '64' numeral with matching SKIVE cds and parcel
label alongside. Reverse with Danish KOLDING transit and HAMBURG
arrival (March 31) cds's. The enormous 157 skilling franking pays
correctly the Danish domestic share of 81 sk. plus the German share
of 76 sk. in the rate between 1 April 1871 and 31 December 1874.
Parcel letters to foreign destinations during the skilling period
are scarce, this cover being the only recorded example of the 157
sk. rate. Provenance: Collection Louise Boyd Dale & Alfred F.

871 cover imagePostal Routes to the German Empire; 1874 (March 22): Partially
prepaid Insured Envelope from Copenhagen to Nürnberg, containing 78
Rigsdaler & 4 Skilling equal to 59 Thaler, bearing 1870 bi-coloured
4 sk. print 10 (AFA 18), lower right corner added and “tying” ink
painted in, tied by '1' numeral with matching KJØBENHAVN despatch
cds and pink label alongside. Struck on obverse by Danish framed
"Talt" (paid) handstamp in blue as well as German framed "Auslagen"

which had to be prepaid for having the postal clerk count and
confirm the enclosed amount up to 250 Rigsdaler. In the rate
between 1 January and 31 December 1874, the Danish postage share
was 8 sk. + 4 sk. per 100 Rd. or part thereof = 12 sk. or 3 Sgr.;
the German postage share was 4 Sgr. for an insured letter plus 1
Sgr. up to 200 Thaler insurance plus 1 Sgr. surcharge for unpaid
insured letters, in total 6 Sgr. A very rare type of mail with
great overall appearance, one of eight recorded international

bearing 1870 bi-coloured 2 sk. blue & grey, 3 sk. lilac & grey, 4
sk. red & grey, and pair 16 sk. green & grey comb. perf. 14x13½
(AFA 20-22+24), all tied by '1' numeral, the 3 sk. adhesive in
addition by matching KIØBENHAVN despatch cds, the violet Copenhagen
insurance label and the framed "Talt" handstamp in blue below two
other adhesives. Obverse struck by framed "Aus (über) Dänemark /
via Woyens." handstamp, "HAMBURG F.A." transit and BERLIN arrival
(March 24) backstamps. An interesting four-colour franking in
suboptimal condition; the 2 sk. stamp is damaged by exterior
placement on the cover and has rounded corner, the 3 sk. with
pulled perforation. The envelope shows some staining and the wax
seals were cut out of the reverse, nevertheless a very rare type of
mail. The 4 sk. stamp pays for the recounting fee (a fee for having
the postal clerk count and confirm the enclosed amount, indicated
by the blue “Talt”) of 4 sk. for 0-250 Rd., which had to be
prepaid. The Danish postage share was 8 sk. + 4 sk. per 100 Rd. or
part thereof = 16 sk. rounded up to 4 1/2 Sgr. The German postage
share was 4 Sgr. for an insured letter + 1 Sgr. for 0-200 Thaler
insurance = 5 Sgr. (fr 5 = 21 sk.), all in the short-lived rate in
force between 1 January 1874 and 31 December 1874. One of eight

combined prepayment from Randers to Vienna, bearing 1858 wavy
spandrels 4 sk. brown in a horizontal strip of five with fair to
large margins, tied by '53' numeral, the leftmost adhesive tied in
addition by RANDERS despatch and framed "Aus Dänemark" handstamp in
black. Reverse with two HAMBURG transit datestamps as well as three
different WIEN datestamps (Dec 20). The correct rate of 22 skilling
in force from 15 July 1854 to 31 July 1865 was paid by a
combination of adhesives and cash payment noted by manuscript “fr
2” in lower left corner. The cover torn at the right side when
opened, nevertheless a rare example of a rate prepaid by a
combination of stamps and cash. This is usually only seen when an
uneven rate needed to be paid as no stamps with an uneven skilling
denomination were issued before 1865. Cert. Møller (2010). (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
