at the coast of the Øresund, bearing 1858 wavy spandrels 4 sk.
brown, print 5 (AFA 7x) in a horizontal strip of four with margins
from good to large, touched at left and with pre-use scissor cut in
the margin between first and second adhesive, each example of the
fine and fresh multiple tied by black pen cross, oval "ÅNGB. BREF
FR. DANMARK" Shipmail cancel in blue alongside, HELSINGBORG transit
(Feb 16) below, STOCKHOLM backstamp (Feb 19). A most appealing way
to pay the 16 sk. rate to Sweden being in force between 15 July
1854 and 30 September 1865, in addition a fine and very clean

844 cover imagePostal Routes to Sweden; 1864ca (June 6): Cover from Copenhagen
showing the partly prepaid reduced border zone rate to Helsingborg,
Sweden, bearing 1863 wavy spandrels 4 sk. brown rouletted, usual
irregular separation, tied by ‘1’ numeral with matching KIØBENHAVN
cds alongside. The reduced border rate was 8 skilling being in
force between 15 July 1854 and 30 September 1865. Partly prepaid
letters were not allowed, but this letter has been accepted
contrary to regulations and only the missing Swedish postage has
been charged with manuscript '9 ore' postage due noted with pencil.
Some foxing on envelope, but the only recorded partly prepaid
border zone letter to Sweden. Cert. Nielsen (2009). Provenance:

845 cover imagePostal Routes to Sweden; 1865 (May 27): Underpaid Envelope from
Copenhagen to Helsingborg, bearing 1864 oval type 2 sk. blue and 4
sk. carmine (AFA 11+13), a fresh examples, the 2 sk. skillfully
repaired at top right, tied by '1' numeral, matching KIØBENHAVN
despatch cds in blue alongside. Framed “Utilstrækkelig frankeret”
(insufficiently prepaid) handstamp struck in red to the front. The
Danish taxation of "6" (skilling) in red crayon reflects the
calculated due based on a rate of 12 skilling for unpaid /
underpaid letters. The Swedish postal administration changed this
to "5 öre" equal to 2 Danish skilling due because the border rate
of 8 skilling was still in force, also for underpaid letters. The
only recorded cover with this postage due rating. Provenance:

horizontal strip of three 1863 4 sk. brown rouletted, one adhesive
strongly damaged at right, tied by '3' numeral of Lübeck. An
appealing cover showing twice the special rate of 12 skilling for
mail from the Duchies to Sweden in force between 1 October 1865 and
30 June 1869. One of six recorded covers showing this 24 sk. rate.

of 1.25 pounds from Copenhagen to Helsingborg, Sweden bearing a
four-colour franking of 1864/65 oval type 2 sk. blue, 3 sk. lilac,
4 sk. carmine, and 16 sk. olive, all comb perf. 13x12½ (AFA
11+12+13+15 / Facit 11+12+13+15), fresh examples of vibrant colour,
tied by '1' numeral of Copenhagen with matching parcel label and
HELSINGØR transit cds (Sept 8) alongside. In the rate between 1
October 1865 and 31 March 1871, the Danish domestic rate for
parcels weighing 1-2 pounds was 12 sk. plus 1 sk. sea postage plus
the Swedish domestic rate of 25 Swedish øre (12 Danish sk.) for
parcels weighing up to 2.25 pounds and sent up to 50 km within
Sweden resulting in a total of 25 sk, correctly prepaid with an
appealing franking. A very rare type of mail in far above average
condition for an 1864-issue cover. A lovely item with 4-colour

849 cover imagePostal Routes to Norway; 1852 (Sept 17): Cover from Copenhagen to
Christiania, Norway, bearing 4 RBS Ferslew chocolate brown from
plate II (AFA 1/I / Facit 2), an overall fine and fresh example
with parts of the upper neighbouring adhesive, touched at base,
tied by two strikes of numeral with two strikes of KIØBENHAVN
despatch cds at left. Reverse with manuscript "1-15" showing
waybill number 1 and 15 Norwegian Specie-skilling to be paid by the
receiver equal to the full postage of 24 Danish skilling in force
between 1 January 1852 and 25 March 1860 disregarding the prepaid 4
skilling. Pre-payment with adhesives was not possible before 15
July 1854, when the usage of stamps sent outside of the Danish
postal territory became generally allowed. Thus, a very rare usage
with 4 RBS to a foreign destination, the earliest known letter to
any foreign destination which was intended to be partly paid with

bearing 1854/57 dotted spandrels 16 sk. grey-violet in a strip of
three, a fine and fresh multiple with margins from shaved to large,
cancelled by '181' numeral with matching "SJAELL.POST.SPED.BUREAU"
railway despatch cds in black and SVINESUND transit cds in blue
alongside. An attractive franking to pay twice the 24 skilling
overland rate via Sweden to Norway in force between 15 July 1854
and 30 September 1865, one of only two recorded cover showing this
48 skilling rate. Great looking cover which has graced many of the
greatest Denmark collections, cert. Nielsen (2003). Provenance:

Haderslev to Frederikshald, bearing 1858 wavy spandrels 4 sk.
brown, a fine and fresh example with even large margins, a pre-use
marginal cut just mentioned for accuracy, cancelled by '23' numeral
with matching HADERSLEV cds's of October 28 & 29 alongside.
Manuscript “Utilstrækkeligt frigjort” denotes the underpayment of
the winter rate of 24 skilling via Sweden in force between 15 July
1854 and 30 Sept 1865. In Norway, the letter was therefore charged
with '13' Norwegian sk. due in red crayon including 12 Norwegian
sk. for the missing 20 Danish skilling plus 1 sk. local delivery
fee. Nearly imperceptible surface damage at left and vertical file
fold well away from franking and datestamps, not distracting from
the lovely overall appearance of the cover. Cert. Møller (2005).

blue and SANDØSUND transit in black alongside. Underpaid for the
first weight rate with 20 skilling rate to Norway by ship in force
between 26 March 1860 and 30 September 1865, second weight rate
noted and Norwegian '12' skilling due noted in red crayon on front,
on reverse manuscript "13/"indicating the amount to be paid by the
recceiver including 1 skilling for the local distribution in
Tønsberg. Cover with minor patina but of very nice appearance, one
of only six recorded covers illustrating this 40 sk. double rate,

horizontal strip of three 1863 4 sk. brown rouletted, separation
partially by scissor cuts, the single example with filing fold,
tied by '53' numeral, the left adhesive in addition by matching
RANDERS despatch cds, SANDØSUND transit backstamp. Manuscript
notation “Utilstrækkeligt frigjort Pedersen” stating the
underpayment of the direct 20 skilling rate to Norway by ship in
force between 26 March 1860 and 30 September 1865. Therefore, it
was taxed with Norwegian '2½' skilling noted in blue crayon on
front and in manuscript on reverse. Cover with patina and some edge
problems, torn into at two places, nevertheless an appealing item
full of postal history, cert. Møller (2005). Provenance:

from Copenhagen to Frederikshald, endorsed "p. Excell. Toll"
steamer, bearing 1855 dotted spandrels 2 sk. blue (touched at top)
in combination with two examples of 1864 oval type 4 sk. red comb
perf. 13x12½ (left example with corner fault and torn horizontally
before being used), tied by '1' numeral with "KIØBENHAVN O.P.E."
despatch cds in blue and CHRISTIANIA transit cds of the following
day in black alongside. From the summer Shipmail rate to Norway of
20 skilling in force between 26 March 1860 and 30 September 1865,
the Danish inland part of 6 skilling and the Seapost part of 4
skilling was franked, while the Norwegian part of 10 Danish
skilling was noted as '6' Norwegian skilling due in red crayon and
had to be paid by the receiver. In spite of its imperfections a
cover with a very nice overall appearance. Cert. Svendsen (1992).

from Copenhagen to Trondheim, bearing 1870 bi-coloured 4 sk. red &
grey from print 11 and 8 sk. brown & grey from print 3, both perf.
14x13½ (AFA 18+19 / Facit 22+23), tied by '1' numeral with matching
KIØBENHAVN despatch cds and parcel label alongside. The postage fee
of 6 sk. for the letter plus 6 sk. for up to 15 Rd. COD to Norway,
in total 12 sk. in the rate from 1 January to 31 December 1874. The
COD letter was returned and the big “12” in orange crayon indicate
payment of a return postage, which was equal to the outward
postage. One of only two recorded COD covers to Norway in the
