Cilicia
Lot Symbol Lot Description CV or Estimate
1499 */cover/bof/(*) imageFrench Occupation of Cilicia 1919/1921: Military & Censorship Group
(10 Covers & Stamps). A valuable group relating to the French
occupation of Cilicia, mounted and written up on album pages,
comprising ten covers together with a small supporting group of
stamps. Among the covers is a censored example bearing the cachet
“CONTROLE POSTAL MILITAIRE / MERSINA CILICIE”, together with three
registered covers from: Mersina, Adana, Trésor et Postes / 608
(World War I Armée d’Orient) and a postcard. Accompanying the
postal history is a small group of twelve predominantly used
stamps, including two blocks of four, a block of six, and a block
of ten, offering useful positional and cancellation study
potential. Condition varies, as is typical for military and
occupation mail of this period, though the group forms a very
useful and increasingly scarce assembly from a short-lived and
historically significant French occupation. A desirable and
instructive lot for the specialist in Levant or French military
postal history. Provenance: Ex John Pitts. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4) (Image 5) (Image 6) (Image 7) (Image 8) (Image 9) (Image 10)
