1915/16: Mount Athos, ½ d. dark green, 1 d. red, 2½ d. in two different colours, 4½ d. yellow, 6 d. violet, and 1 s. light brown, a series of seven different stamps in two different sizes with inscriptions in
English, Russian, and Greek, each value in an unused horizontal or vertical pair. Note: This issue is unusual in a number of respects, they were produced in a photographic process (in sheets of twelve for each value) on board the H.M.
Aircraft Carrier 'Ark Royal' during World War I. These came about because of a planned allied takeover of the Holy Mountain District of Mount Athos, and were prepared to be used at the local post office. When the military project
was abandoned these issues were not used for their intended purpose, but nearly all of the stamps were destroyed making them extremely rare. The British naval officer responsible for the project, Lt. Commander Harry Pirie-Gordon
prepared also a Greek "AGION OROS / 25.1.1916" two-line datestamp (the intended day of issue) and the lot includes a 1 d. adhesive cancelled in this manner. (Image 1)
