circular Cover to Constantinople bearing 1863 Arms 2 so. perf. 14,
a fresh and fine example, fine embossed with intense colour, tied
by crisp BUCAREST cds (Tchilinghirian fig 714). This most
attractive single franking is one of few Printed matter items sent
within the Levant in the 2 soldi rate, the only example from
Romania. Illustrated in Edition d'Or volume 72 on page 35, signed

1949 cover imageAustrian Consular Offices, Bucharest; 1864/66: Spectacular Duo of
two entire letters from the same correspondence to Ruschuk, one
bearing 1863 Arms 5 s. rose perf. 14, the other with pair 1864 5 s.
rose perf. 9½, the adhesives tied by BUCAREST cds in black
(Tchilinghirian fig. 714). In both cases, horizontal filing fold
well below adhesives. Extremely scarce entires paying the single or
double rate for a cover within the Levant up to ten miles, an
extremely rare tariff only known from this Bucharest to Ruschuk
correspondence. Makes a wonderful page, the cover with the pair
signed Pfenninger, illustrated in Edition d'Or volume 72 on page
33. Ferchenbauer = € 3'000 + 1'300. Reference: The single franking
displayed and describes in Gmach, part III on page 364. Provenance:

1950 cover Austrian Consular Post Offices, Bucharest; 1865/66: Group of six
franked covers / entire letters from Bucharest, the adhesives tied
by BUCAREST or BUKAREST cds's, incl. two 15 soldi frankings to
Elöpatak and Troppau in thr Empire, an 1865 cover with 1863 10 s. &
15 s. to Constnatinople, ex Cihangir, another 15 s. franking to the
same destination after the rate change in October 1866, a 1866
cover to Switzerland with pair 15 s. perf. 9½, and an 1869 entire
to France with an 1867 40 soldi franking; also two 1855 entire
letters paid in cash, one of them sent registered and 1862 porto
entire. An appealing ensemble showing mail to Austria, within the
Levant, and abroad.

1951 cover imageAustrian Consular Post Offices, Craiova Postal Expedition; 1857
(Nov 22): Entire letter from Craiova via Orsova to Pest, struck on
front by "POST. EXPE. KRAIOWA" handstamp in blue (Tchilinghirian
fig. 734), day and month added in manuscript, indistinct transit
cds of "ALT-ORSOVA" alongside. Cover punched and corresponding
datestamp of Orsova disinfection struck on reverse, PESTH arrival
(Nov 29) alongside. Charged upon arrival with "12" kreuzer CM with
9 kreuzer for the third rayon plus 3 kreuzer zutaxe. Illustrated in
Edition d'Or volume 72 on page 66. Note: In March / April 1857,
after the end of the Crimean War, the fieldpost office in Craiova
was closed, but no consular office opened. Local merchants
organised therefore a private postal connection to the border post
office at Orsova, latest from May 1857, where mail was fed into the
Austrian postal system. The private local service used the "POST.
EXPE. KRAIOWA" handstamp which is found on outgoing and incoming

1952 cover imageAustrian Consular Offices, Fokschan; 1866 (March 23): Cover to
Vienna, bearing 1864 Arms 15 s. brown perf 9½, tied by FOKSCHAN cds
in blackish blue (Tchilinghirian fig. 738). Reverse with wreathed
JASSY and WIEN transit as well as framed "MARIAHILF WIEN" arrival
(March 29) datestamps. One or two perforations with slight toning
but a very scarce usage of this issue from a very elusive office
with three franked covers known - the Houser collection had no
stamped covers at all. Illustrated in Edition d'Or volume 72 on
page 49, signed Colla; cert. Ferchenbauer (2004). Note: An
interesting rate, sent after the Austrian rate had already been
unified to 5 kreuzer on 1 January 1866, while the Levant rate was
unchanged until 1 October 1866. Reference: Displayed and discussed

rate Cover to Montpellier, despatched on board of a DDSG vessel,
bearing a mass franking of 1864 10 so. blue and 15 s. brown (eight
single examples and vertical pair), all perf. 9½, eleven overall
fine examples each tied upon transit in Vienna with three-ring ‘1’
target postmark, the two adhesives at top left with pencil
annotation “Gallatz”. Two adhesives tied in addition by French
“AUTR. STRASBOURG” entry cds (April 24) in red, “P.D.” in red and
“A.” (Autriche) handstamps alongside. Reverse with WIEN (April 21)
and PARIS transit cds’s as well as French ambulants and MONTPELLIER
arrival cds (April 25). The top left stamp repaired, some cover
wrinkles and horizontal filing fold between the adhesives,
nevertheless an impressive franking, paying correctly four times
the 40 soldi rate to France. Illustrated in Edition d'Or volume 72

Corfu, Ionian Islands, bearing 1863 Arms 3 s. green perf. 14, three
single examples glued over the edge of the cover and vertical Strip
of 3 in mixed franking with 1864 2 s. yellow perf 9½, an
unbelievable combination to pay the 20 soldi rate, the adhesives
tied by GALATZ despatch cds (Tchilinghirian fig. 744). Charged upon
arrival with '20' lepta for the Greek inland part of the voyage,
noted in red crayon on front and paid with Consecutive Athens
Printing 10 l. orange (2) on front, two fine and fresh adhesives
with good to large margins, tied by neat KERKYRA cds (Sept 6,
julian). Reverse with another KERKYRA arrival cds. Two large
disinfection slits, one below a 10 lepta adhesive which is not
touched as it was added later on. The cover heavily folded
vertically, stabilized internally with hinges, four of the 3 soldi
adhesives impaired by the archival crease and the position over the
edge, lifted to iron these, nevertheless an outstanding cover from
Romania to Greece, illustrated in Edition d'Or volume 72 on page

Manchester, Great Britain, bearing a mixed currency franking of
Austrian Levant 1864 Arms 5 s. rose and 15 s. brown (2) in
combination with Austria 1864 Arms 5 kreuzer rose, all perf 9½,
tied by GALATZ despatch cds (Tchilinghirian fig. 744), framed
"P.D." in red alongside. Obverse with '14' kreuzer weiterfranco
debit for the UK in red crayon, reverse with WIEN transit and
MANCHESTER arrival (March 21) cds's. An ironed horizontal file fold
touching the 5 kreuzer adhesive does not distract from the extreme
rarity of this combination of two currencies but same colours,
unique for Romania, a wonderful cover. Illustrated in Edition d'Or
volume 72 on page 46, signed Colla; cert. Ferchenbauer (2004)

shaved at right, tied by KERKYRA cds (Oct 12, julian). Disinfection
slits stabilized from the interior, a light vertical filing fold,
nevertheless an appealing combination cover, rarely seen from

Double rate Envelope via Vienna to Genova bearing a fantastic
four-colour franking of 1863 2 so. yellow perf. 14 in combination
with 1864 5 so. rose, 10 so. blue (single example and strip of five
on front, one additional on reverse for the registration fee), as
well as 15 so. brown, all these perf. 9½, all cancelled / tied by
six clear strikes of IBRAILA cds (Tchilinghirian fig. 730). The
cover struck on obverse by “P.D” and “RACCOM.” handstamps, reverse
with oval “WIEN RECOMMAND” transit (Feb 4) datestamp and part
strike of Genova arrival cds. Ironed filing fold through one 10 so.
adhesive on front and the one on reverse, part of backflap missing,
nevertheless a most attractive and interesting cover from the
Levant to Italy via Vienna not via the Lloyd and Trieste, the
exceptional franking of 82 soldi on front pays twice 15 soldi from
the Levant to Vienna and twice 26 kreuzer from Vienna to Italy,
i.e. from the third Austrian into the second Italian rayon. A
stunning piece, four-colour frankings even not mentioned in
Ferchenbauer, illustrated in Edition d'Or volume 72 on page 54,
cert. Sorani (1995). Provenance: Gärtner sale 34 (June 2016), lot

1963 cover imageAustrian Consular Post Offices, Roman; 1866ca (March 9): Quadruple
rate Envelope to Czernovitz, Bukowina, bearing 1864 Arms 10 s. blue
(single example and pair) and 15 s. brown (2), all perf. 9½, five
fresh and fine examples with good perforation and well embossed, a
dazzling franking from this elusive post office, tied by four
strikes of the scarce ROMAN cds in black (Tchilinghirian fig 772).
Reverse with wreathed JASSY transit and CZERNOWITZ arrival cds
(March 12). Minor edge wear, of no importance due to the unique
nature of this cover, the only franked cover recorded from ROMAN,
unknown to Gmach, illustrated in Edition d'Or volume 72 on page 61,
cert. Puschmann (2008). Note 1: As the actual year of despatch is
not clear, the rate of the cover can only be guessed. A despatch in
March 1864 as suggested by a former owner of this cover is
impossible as the first Arms adhesives perforated 14 came into use
not earlier than April 1864. If sent in March 1865 or 1866, this
was a quadruple letter, if sent in March 1867 this was a sixfold
letter. Note 2: The receiver of the letter was Alexandru Hurmuzachi
(1823-1871), a Romanian publicist , socio-political figure, lawyer,
journalist, and folklorist. Provenance: Collection Julius
