issues on blued paper, including imperforate examples with a useful
range of shades, and later perforated issues with multiples,
including three unused blocks of four (SG 3/6), and selections
identified as SG 2–6. Also includes lithographed provisionals, with
1 d. blue (SG 13) on piece (cut into) with dated cancellation (Oct.
7, 1852), accompanied by research notes referencing the West Indies
Philatelic Study Group census, a scarce early usage. Thereafter a
representative range of later Britannia types, including perforated
with shades and watermark varieties (Crown CC and CA), together
with QV keyplates, including values to 5 s., and later issues to 10
s. (used), with additional high values including £1, 10 s. and 5 s.
(SG 122-124). Further strength in 1883–1900 issues with a good
spread of denominations, shades and printings, and a useful group
of Postage Due issues to 1 s. near complete including D1/D17.
Additionally, a stockbook of Trinidad & Tobago issues from the 20th
century onwards, largely mint with sets, part sets and thematic
issues, including QEII definitives, commemoratives and higher

1517 **/*/piece/bof/(*) imageTunisia 1888–1956: Comprehensive duplicated stock of used and
unused issues, housed in two stock books and loose pages, covering
the French Protectorate period from the first 1888 issues through
to the mid-1950s. The first volume spans SG 1 (1888) to 1944/45,
including early issues with SG 1–7 unused, SG 7 and 8 (5 f. mauve)
used, 1888/98 values including SG 19–21 unused, and the 1899/1901
new colour issues to 35c brown unused. Later sets are well
represented both mint and used, including 1906/18 issues, 1925
Child Welfare, and the 1938 Tunisian Postal Service set of 20
unused. Parcel Post sets are present in both mint and used
condition. Postage dues from 1901 onwards are included, together
with an extensive holding of “T” perfins from the first three
series (1st series 15 examples, 2nd series 48 examples, 3rd series
22 examples). A small specialised group has been selected for
cancellations. The second volume (1945/1956) contains strong ranges
of both unused and used material from the later Protectorate
period, providing continuity through to the pre-independence era. A
substantial holding with useful depth in early issues, dues and
perfins, offering both a strong foundation for further expansion
and excellent potential for development into a specialised study.

1520 cover imageTunisia, Postal Stationery 1888–1956: Comprehensive and
well-researched exhibition collection of Tunisian postal
stationery, attractively mounted and written up on 71 exhibition
pages, comprising 65 unused and 42 used items, with many better and
scarce examples. The collection includes a detailed study of
postcards (1888–1944) with a range of printings, upratings and
usages; airmail cards (1942–43); letter cards (1888–1920) including
express usages; and envelopes (1888–1931); picture postcards
1888-1956 reflecting the Regency Under French Protection (18). Both
mint and commercially used examples are present, illustrating rate
changes, cancellations, routes and period developments. Several
scarcer and less frequently encountered items are included,
providing depth beyond a representative holding. Neatly organised
and clearly the result of sustained study, this is an excellent
foundation for further specialisation or exhibition expansion in
the field of North African postal stationery. Provenance: Ex John

1521 cover imageTUNISIA ITALIAN POST OFFICES IN THE TURKISH PROTECTORATE 1864–1890:
Specialised exhibition collection of 49 items (predominantly
covers), neatly mounted and written up on 44 exhibition pages,
documenting the operations of the Italian Post Offices at Tunis
during the Ottoman period and into the early French Protectorate
era. The collection begins with the early use (1864–1873) of the
double-circle “TUNISI / POSTE ITALIANE” datestamp on De La Rue
printed issues, including numerous covers from Tunis to Italian
destinations such as Bordighera, Livorno, Parma and Torino,
together with a significant group of Tunis–Genoa correspondence (16
examples) and incoming covers from England (3) including 1872 Queen
Victoria line engraved (1 d.) and surface printed (6 d.)
combinaion, also one from Genoa to Tunis. The distinctive small
dotted numeral “235” cancellation of Tunis is well represented,
showing its continued use in conjunction with the cds struck
elsewhere on the cover. From 1 January 1874 the “ESTERO” issues for
Italian Post Offices in the Levant are represented by 14 franked
covers, illustrating continued use of numeral “235” and the
double-circle TUNISI datestamp to destinations including Livorno,
Genoa, Berlin, Cagliari and registered mail to Naples (2). The
study clearly demonstrates the transition through the French
Protectorate period (from 1881) while maintaining Italian postal
operations. Additionally included are three items of the Tunisian
Regency (circa 1890), providing contextual continuity. A carefully
assembled and well-researched study of Italian postal operations in
Tunisia, rich in cancellations, routes and destination material,
and offering an excellent basis for further specialization or
exhibition expansion in the field of Levant and Mediterranean
postal history. Provenance: Ex John Pitts. 573 cover image1809 (20 Jan.): Folded entire letter from New York to Paris,
bearing a very fine strike on reverse of the scarce negative
circular forwarding agent marking of Bryden’s Coffee House, New
York, depicting a packet ship in the centre. The folded letter with
clear dateline “New York le 20 Janvier 1809,” and an attractive
engraved merchant’s heading of J. B. Moussard, Nouveautés en gros,
adding considerable visual and historical interest; the contents
well preserved and of commercial nature. Carried by packet service
and handled via the Tontine Coffee House, the marking applied by J.
Bryden, whose distinctive handstamp saw only three months use
during 1809. The strike is bold and well-defined, showing the
characteristic negative design with central sailing vessel, clearly
struck and of excellent clarity. Reverse with French transit cds in
red (May 18 1809) and expert mark of Jean Pothion in green, the
distinguished authority on French postal history and obliterations,
whose seminal works and catalogues remain standard references in
the field. Minor peripheral imperfections and opening tear as to be
expected for a transatlantic entire of this period, but overall of
very fine appearance. A rare and highly desirable forwarding agent
marking, this handstamp being among the scarcest of the New York
coffee house usages, and seldom encountered on complete
transatlantic letters. An attractive and historically important
entire with notable provenance. Signed Pothion. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
