ample to large margins, just shaved at top right, centrally
cancelled by crisp red grid obliterator with bold strike of
"ROSWELL / Ga. / JAN 17" despatch cds at left on 1850 double
rate-entire to Savannah, Georgia. Two vertical file-folds well away
from the adhesive. A scarce and most attractive intra-state usage
of the 10 Cent Washington from rural Georgia, pre-paying the rate
for a letter up to 1 oz. over a distance of under 300 miles. Cert.

586 imageWiley Post Round the World Flight from US to the East 1933 (July
15): Legal sized "A. Wittnauer Co. Watches" envelope with imprint
at top left and 'LONGINES' advertisment on the back, franked with
8c. Airmail stamp, addressed to J. P. V. Heinmuller c/o National
Aeronaut Association in Washington D.C., in New York additionally
franked with added 8c. (Aug. 3) and forwarded to Washington D.C.,
despite of fact that the real date of arrival was July 22nd. It is
believed that very few covers accompanied Post on this flight which
was successful in creating a new record for flying solo around the
world (15,596 miles in 7 days, 18 hours, and 49½ minutes) which
went unbeaten for five years. The American pilot succeeded the
first solo flight around the world in his Lockheed Vega 5B “Winnie
Mae” airplane and became the first person to circumnavigate Earth
twice. He flew solo around the world, a distance of 15,596 miles in
seven days, breaking the Speed record of 15,596 miles in 186h and
49.5’ (115h and 36.5’ in the air). The route was: New York - Berlin
- Moscow - Irkutsk - Rukhlova Khabarovsk - Flat, Alaska (where he

587 cover imageSpecial Delivery, 1885 10 c. Blue Issue 1885: 10 c. blue, First Day
Cover, additionally franked with 2 c. red brown, tied by New York
(Oct 1) duplex, addressed to Master Louis D. Hopkins, Catskill
N.Y., reverse with "Catskill, N.Y. Recd 7 PM" (Oct 1) arrival
backstamp, with newspaper clipping from the Catskill Recorder
affixed to cover, reading "The special delivery system went into
operation at the Catskill post office yesterday with Charles
Everest as messenger. Last evening the first letter with the
special stamp was received. It was addressed to Louis D. Hopkins,
son of Hon. S.T. Hopkins. Messenger Everest made lively time in
delivering the letter.", endorsed below "Mail Oct 2/85", additional
note affixed at left reading "....the first letter received at he
Catskill office under the new special delivery was for Master Lewis
D. Hopkins...", some staining, both cover and stamp torn at upper
left, but a great rarity, one of the highlights of this exhibit,
and a key piece in the history of the Special Delivery service.

attractive group of U.S. Special Delivery material comprising
classic die proofs, essays and an advanced postal history study.
Included are two 1888 10 c. blue die proofs on India, die-sunk on
card (approx. 122 × 111 mm and 200 × 136 mm respectively), fresh
impressions; 1902 10 c. ultramarine small die proof on wove (one of
only 3–5 believed printed); 1908 10 c. “Merry Widow” shaded hat
colour trial essays in two colours; and a group of four 1908 10 c.
woodcut essays on card including early and later frameline states
(one with Philatelic Foundation certificate). In addition, an
exhibit-mounted study of the 1925 15 c. deep orange (Scott E13)
comprising seven covers, including one of approximately
seventy-five recorded First Day Covers, Maiden Voyage Santa Lucia
unpaid first-class usage, scarce parcel post insert tag usages
including rare combination with 1925 20 c. black Special Delivery
on parcel tag, 1929 parcel post card for overweight first-class
mail, later parcel tags (c. 1931–39), and foreign destination
covers to Belgium and Germany. Minor faults and some oxidation as
usual on certain stamps, yet overall a fine and scarce specialised

commencing with imperforate issues including 1851–56 1 c. and 10 c.
types, followed by a useful range of 1857–60 perforated issues and
1861–66 Civil War period with values to 30 c., including various
shades and types. 1867 grilled issues represented, with later Bank
Note issues (1870–79) including examples with and without grill,
and a representative selection of higher values. 1869 Pictorial
issue present (used), together with subsequent issues showing a
good spread of denominations. Later issues include 1890–93 series,
1894 Bureau issues with values to 30 c., and a useful showing of
Trans-Mississippi 1898 (part set to 50 c.). 1901 Pan-American issue
present, and early 20th century definitives including 1902–03 and
1906 imperforates. Parcel Post 1912–13 largely complete used,
together with Parcel Post Dues, and a strong showing of Postage Due
issues from 1879 onwards. Later issues include a near-complete 1938
Presidential (“Prexie”) series to $5. Condition mixed, particularly
in the earlier issues, though many sound examples and an overall
attractive, well-organised collection with good representation
throughout.
