4531 **/* image1907 (May-June): Lakatoi group of eight unused examples of the
overprinted small “Papua” in black, horizontal wmk., thick and thin
paper, line perf. 14. A carefully assembled study of the ½ d. to 2
s. 6 d. values comprising: ½ d. black and yellow-green, thick paper
(SG34), ½ d. thin paper (SG34a), 2½ d. black and ultramarine
(SG35), together with thin paper example (SG35a) and 2½ d. black
and dull blue (SG35ac), 1 s. black & orange (SG36), 2 s. 6 d. black
& brown line perf (SG37) and a comb perf example (unlisted perf
variety). The group provides a clear comparison of paper types and
shades across the key lower and high-values of the issue. Generally
fine and fresh, with large part original gum. Of particular
interest is the 2 s. 6 d. 'comb perf' example, not listed, adding
specialist significance to the assembly Gi = £ 1'010+. (Image 1)

4532 **/* image1907: Lakatoi small “Papua” overprint, Mult Rosettes wmk., comb
perf 14: specialised positional study of the “d for p”, raised ‘P’
and pin-hole setting varieties, positions 16 and 17. A remarkable
assembly of seven unused horizontal pairs comprising: ½ d., 1 d., 2
d., 2½ d., 1 s. and 2 s. 6 d. thick and thin paper (SG37-SG41,
SG44b & SG45a), each pair taken from positions 16/17 of the
overprint forme. All examples retain marginal slevedge to the left,
further confirming sheet position and enhancing their importance as
plating references. Condition is generally fine to very fine,
whilst the odd fault or imperfection, they are fresh and with large
part original gum. A highly instructive positional study,
demonstrating the sheet mechanics of the Brisbane overprinting and
offering exceptional specialist interest Gi = £ 675+. (Image 1)

4533 **/* image1907: Lakatoi small “Papua” overprint, horizontal and vertical
wmk., thin and thick paper, comb and line perforations: specialised
unused assembly SG34–SG45a, including examples of the “d for p”
overprint flaw. A comprehensive album page comprising fifteen
unused examples spanning the ½ d. to 2 s. 6 d. denominations,
including SG34, SG35, SG36, SG37, SG38, SG39, SG40, SG41, SG42,
SG43, SG44, SG45a and associated thin/thick paper and watermark
variations. The group includes clear examples of the well-known “d
for p” overprint flaw, illustrating positions from the affected
setting (positions 10, 16 and 21), together with representative
values from both horizontal and vertical watermark printings. Both
comb and line perforations are represented, providing a balanced
comparative study of this complex first Papua overprint issue.
Condition generally fine to very fine with the odd fault, fresh
colour and large part original gum. A cohesive and attractive study
Gi = £1,225+ excluding uncertified. (Image 1)

4534 **/* image1907: Lakatoi issue, small “Papua” overprint, horizontal and
vertical wmk., comb and line perforations: specialised unused
assembly SG34-SG45a, illustrating the “Raised ‘P’” / overprint
setting flaw and "Thin d Flaw" (SG35, 35a & 41). An expanded
comparative page comprising fifteen unused examples across the ½ d.
to 2 s. 6 d. denominations, including SG34, SG35, SG35a, SG36,
SG37, SG38, SG39, SG40, SG41, SG42, SG43, SG44, SG44a and SG45a,
representing both horizontal and vertical watermark printings on
thin and thick papers. The group is arranged to illustrate the
distinctive overprint setting characteristic (often described as
the “Raised ‘P’” flaw), occurring in specific positions of the
sheet (positions 8 & 17), and showing the progressive misalignment
of the overprint relative to the base design. Both comb and line
perforations are represented, allowing clear study of the flaw
across watermark orientations and denominations. The odd fault,
although overall fine to very fine unused, with large part original
gum. A cohesive and instructive study page, seldom assembled with
this breadth and comparative clarity Gi = £ 2'700+. (Image 1)

comprising twelve examples including SG39 (1 d.), SG43 (6 d.),
SG35a (2½ d.) and SG41 (2½ d.), illustrating multiple “kiss print”
overprint impressions and related flaws. The group includes several
clear overprint kiss prints across different denominations, “No bar
on p of Papua”, “Postagie” instead of "Postage" variety (used),
black lines at right of overprint, thick paper example (SG41) and
“Lines across sky” flaw. A useful comparative assembly
demonstrating flaws and irregularities within the Small Papua
issue. Condition generally fine to very fine; unused examples with
large part original gum Gi = £480+. (Image 1)

thin and thick papers, comb and line perforations: specialised
assembly, comprises eleven unused examples across values including:
SG38 (½ d. black & yellow-green, thin paper, comb perf), SG39 (1 d.
black & carmine, thin paper, comb perf), SG40 (2 d. black & violet,
thin paper, comb perf), SG40 line perforated (unlisted), SG41 (2½
d. black & ultramarine, thick paper), SG42 (4 d. black & sepia,
thin paper), SG42a (4 d. “Deformed d” variety), SG43 (6 d. black &
myrtle-green, thin paper), SG44 (1 s. black & orange, thick paper,
line perf), SG44a (1 s. black & orange, thin paper, comb perf), and
SG45a (2 s. 6 d. black & brown, thin paper, comb perf). A carefully
constructed comparative study of the vertical watermark printings,
clearly illustrating both thin and thick papers and both comb and
line perforations across the principal denominations. Fresh colour
and very fine appearance throughout, the 2 d. has a diagonal crease
otherwise just the odd minor imperfection noted. The majority
unmounted large part original gum. Of particular significance are
the scarce SG42a “Deformed d” and the 2 d. line perforated example
(SG40), not listed, adding specialist importance to the assembly Gi
= £1,105+ SG40 not calculated. (Image 1)

Plate 2 position 29 constant variety “Cross on the Hill”,
represented on later Small “Papua” printings. The page comprises
four unused examples: SG43 (6 d. Small “Papua”), SG44 (1 s. Small
“Papua”), SG44b (1 s. shade, Small “Papua”), and SG45a (2 s. 6 d.
Small “Papua”). The assembly further confirms the persistence of
the vignette flaw; the distinct cross-shaped marking on the hill
above the Lakatoi; through the later Small “Papua” printings,
demonstrating the continued use of Plate 2 without alteration to
position 29. Good to fresh colours and fine to very fine
throughout, neatly presented as the concluding section of a
comparative overprint and plating study, unused examples with og.
where applicable. (Image 1) (Image 2)
