4559 * image1909: Lakatoi ½ d. green & black, sideways Crown over double-lined
A watermark, compound perf 11 and 12½ , horizontal side marginal
pair from positions 6–7; position 6 exhibiting the scarce compound
perforation variety 11 × 12½, with the differing perforation gauges
clearly visible between the vertical and horizontal sides. Position
7 shows the constant variety “Pole to Sail” flaw, providing an
attractive and instructive positional combination. The marginal
selvedge confirms sheet position and enhances its value as a
plating and production study. The compound perforation resulted
from the use of different perforating machines during the 1909
printing and is rarely encountered, particularly in positional
format. Hinge reinforcement down left side and centrally, as might
be expected, otherwise, fine unused with slight climatic
discoloration to large part original gum. An exhibition-level
positional example of this important compound perforation variety
Gi = £ 5'500. (Image 1) (Image 2)

over double-lined A watermark, perf 12½, an unused example, of
fresh colour, with imperforate at right. An exceptional positional
example from position 1, showing a right-hand imperforate margin,
the remaining three sides perforated 12½ as issued. The part right
selvedge confirms its origin from the sheet edge. A rare production
variety of the 1910/11 printing and is seldom encountered,
particularly on the high-value 2 s. 6 d. Type B. Fine and with
large part original gum. A highly desirable sheet-edge imperforate
variety of this key high denomination. (Image 1) (Image 2)

4570 **/* image1910/11: Large Papua 2 s. 6 d. black and brown specialised plating
study comprising twelve unused examples, including both Type B
(1910) and Type C (1911) printings, illustrating master plate
transfers and multiple retouches to the stone, with identified
positions including: 7, 11, 12, 14, 17, 20, 22, 25 and 29. The
group demonstrates the progression from first printing transfers
through later retouched states. Both upright and inverted watermark
(3) orientations are represented, adding further technical depth to
the study. The page forms an advanced examination of the
lithographic process on the key high denomination, clearly
illustrating the transfer characteristics from the original British
New Guinea 2 s. 6 d. master plates to the Papua working stones.
Condition generally fine to very fine unused with large part
original gum. A rarely assembled and instructive plating group of
this important high value Gi = £ 900+. (Image 1)
