4511 * image1907 (May-June): Lakatoi 2 s. 6 d. black and brown, overprinted
with small “Papua” in black, horizontal wmk., thick paper, perf.
14, an unused example, of fresh colour, showing variety "Overprint
Reading Downwards". A striking and scarce sideways overprint
variety, the overprint clearly misplaced and well clear of its
normal orientation. From position 8, showing a strong and
well-defined overprint impression. Slight browning to gum,
otherwise very fine. A visually impressive example of this
recognised overprint error. Cert. Blair (2018) Gi = £ 7'500. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4)

4516 image1907 (May-June): Lakatoi ½ d. black and yellow-green, overprinted
with small “Papua” in black, comb perf., vertical wmk., a used
example of strong colour, fine appearance, neatly cancelled by
black cds, variety "Thick Paper". A remarkable new discovery,
printed on distinctly thick paper and exhibiting comb perforation,
differing from the normally encountered line perf examples.
Believed to be the first example brought to light, discovered in
the Michael Ryan collection, and likely originating from a single
sheet only. Currently unlisted in Stanley Gibbons. Accompanied by
British Commonwealth Expertising Service certificate (2018, Jerry
Blair), confirming comb perforation, vertical watermark and
substantially thicker paper, and recognising it as a new variety. A
rare and important addition to the Small Papua overprint series.

with small “Papua” in black, vertical wmk., perf. 14, an unused
example, of fresh colour, variety "Double Overprint". A rare
example of the listed double overprint, the second impression
clearly visible to the naked eye. This stamp originates from the
horizontal strip across positions 16–20, the doubling becoming
progressively closer toward position 20, yet remaining distinct.
Additionally position 20, showing the “white leaves”
characteristic. Accompanied by expert certificate, confirming the
presence of the double overprint. Fine appearance, large part
original gum. A scarce and desirable variety from this issue. Cert.

small “Papua” in black, vertical wmk., thick paper, line perf. 14.
A rare used example of this key high-value, printed on the true
thick paper of the original British New Guinea printing. The
overprint strong and well positioned, characteristic of the early
settings from the limited sheets overprinted. Good colour and clear
cancellation, the shade deeper than the thin paper printings and
readily distinguishable. A particularly difficult stamp to obtain
used, especially in sound and well-defined condition. A scarce and
highly desirable certified example of this important Papua rarity.

demonstrates the persistence of the vignette flaw, which is a
distinct cross-shaped marking on the hill above the Lakatoi,
through both Large and Small “Papua” overprint settings, confirming
the unchanged Plate 2 origin of the variety despite alterations in
overprint type and format. Generally fresh colours and fine to very
fine throughout, with the odd imperfection, neatly arranged as a
comparative overprint study, predominantly unused examples with og.
