4491 **/*/bof/(*) image1901/05: Lakatoi specialist study page comprising three items.
Including a large piece of unsevered rosette watermarked paper,
showing the Multi-Rosette Watermarked on ungummed paper (70 x 50
mm), from the original security scrap, illustrating the multiple
watermark impressions, together with ½ d. green, vertical wmk.,
bottom corner marginal examples (2) showing part of the sheet plate
numbers: Plate 1 example (SG9a) with partial “1” in selvedge and
Plate 2 example (SG9) with partial “2” in selvedge; the former in a
lower right marginal block of four with guide cross, the latter a
corner horizontal pair. An unusual and instructive assembly
demonstrating watermark layout and sheet numbering, the watermarked
paper rarely preserved in this format and multiples showing partial
plate number are scarce. Fresh colour, the odd tone spot and kink,
but overall a fine unused group with original gum where applicable. (Image 1)

perforation anomalies comprising two marginal blocks of six from
different plates. The first example (Plate 1) shows line
perforation as listed (SG9), while the second example (Plate 2)
shows comb perforation on thick paper, an unlisted configuration in
Stanley Gibbons. Both blocks are unused marginal, good colour and
fine appearance, with large part original gum. The Plate 2 block is
illustrated and discussed in Parr & Robinson, Collector’s Guide to
the Stamps of British New Guinea and the Territory of Papua
(1884–1942), in the section dealing with perforation anomalies. A
scarce and significant comparative study of early Lakatoi
production varieties. Ref: Collector’s Guide to the Stamps of

Multiple Rosettes wmk., line perf. 14, used with light cds cancel
in black, strong colour, fine and well-centred example,
representing the scarce thin paper printing. As with the thin paper
4 d., 6 d. and 1 s. values, the 2 s. 6 d. was primarily distributed
mint to collectors, genuinely used examples arising only from
copies returned to British New Guinea for postal cancellation,
rendering such examples distinctly scarce. A highly desirable

variety. An attractive and well-matched unused set, each value
clearly showing the absence of shading in the lower leaf ornaments,
neatly arranged to demonstrate the consistency of the variety
across denominations. Particularly appealing as bottom marginal
examples, enhancing their positional character. Fresh colours and
fine to very fine throughout. (Image 1)

perf. 14: complete second issue set SG9-SG16, including SG13a
“Deformed d” variety, with additional comb perforation examples.
The page comprises fourteen unused examples: SG9 (½ d. black &
yellow-green), SG10 (1 d. black & carmine), SG11 (2 d. black &
violet), SG11a (2 d. violet), SG12 (2½ d. black & ultramarine),
SG13 (4 d. black & sepia), SG13a (4 d. “Deformed d” variety), SG14
(6 d. black & myrtle-green), SG15 (1 s. black & orange), and SG16
(2 s. 6 d. black & brown), together with additional examples of
SG9, SG10, SG11a, SG12 and SG15 showing the scarce comb
perforation. A comprehensive and well-matched representation of the
second De La Rue printing on thick paper with vertical Multiple
Rosettes watermark, illustrating both standard line perforation and
the rare comb perforation, the latter seldom encountered across
multiple denominations. The key SG13a “Deformed d” variety is
present unmounted, and the high value SG16 (2 s. 6 d.) is ex John
DuPont collection, accompanied by Blair certificate (2015). Fresh
colours and fine to very fine throughout, predominantly unmounted
or lightly hinged. Rare assembly Gi = £ 7'265+. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

vertical watermark printings.. A well-presented comparative study
showing the distinctive absence of shading in the lower leaf
ornaments (“White Leaves”) across multiple denominations and
positions, including examples from differing watermark
orientations. The odd fault, minor browning and small imperfections
as to be expected in a specialised positional group of this nature,
although most fresh colours and fine throughout, predominantly with
large part original gum. A scarce and increasingly difficult
variety to assemble across so many values Gi = £ 730. (Image 1)

SG1a-SG16a, including SG4ab, with accompanying certificates. The

of the thin paper printings, representing both horizontal and
vertical Multiple Rosettes watermarks and including the scarce comb
perforation on thin paper. The exceptionally rare SG4ab is present
in very fine condition, seldom offered thus. All examples are
unused, unmounted or lightly mounted, with the sole exception of
the used SG10. The key thin paper rarities are supported by Blair
certificates, confirming authenticity and quality. A cohesive study

completeness and condition Gi = £5,245+. (Image 1) (Image 2)

variety “Cross on the Hill”, represented across twelve unused
examples, spanning multiple denominations and printings. The page
comprises SG1 (½ d. green), SG2 (1 d. carmine), SG3 (2 d.
ultramarine), SG5 (4 d. black and brown), SG6 (6 d. black and
olive-green), SG7 (1 s. black and orange), SG9 (½ d. yellow-green),
SG10 (1d red), SG11 and SG11a (2 d. violet shades), SG16a (2 s. 6
d. brown and black), and SG17 (4 d. sepia Large “Papua” overprint).
The assembly clearly demonstrates the constancy of the flaw in the
vignette; a distinct cross-shaped marking on the hill above the
Lakatoi; confirming its origin in the keyplate and its persistence
across values, shades, and the subsequent large “Papua” overprint.
In the main fresh colours and good to fine with very fine present,
the odd fault, neatly arranged as a cross-denomination plating
study, exclusively unused with all but one with original gum Gi = £
