4483 (*) image1901/05: Lakatoi De La Rue archive imperforate plate proof vertical
pairs ½ d. to 2 s. 6 d. (7), printed on watermarked paper, large
margins all round, each pair with bottom marginal selvedge, strong
colour, fine appearance, dated 17/9/01, 20/9/01, 25/9/01 and
27/9/01, including 1 d. and 1 s. with variety “Sickle Flaw”. Sharp
impressions throughout. Margins showing original paper registration
crosses. Each has a central vertical crease and typical light
archival toning, some staining and a tone spot on the 6 d., with
minor aging to the periphery as is usual for these De La Rue
records. Neatly mounted on a album page, fine appearance. A rare
and historically important group, illustrating early plate states
and the development of the “Sickle Flaw”, the proofs displaying
strong detail and excellent contrast; overall well preserved and
attractive exhibition pieces. Ref: Collector's Guide to the Stamps
of British New Guinea and the Territory of Papua (1884-1942), Parr
& Robinson, illustrated page 36-39. Note: The above guide outlines
the discovery that the 'Sickle Flaw' wore out over a short period
of time and was not re-touched as per Cocker. (Image 1) (Image 2)
