12½, a horizontal pair used on 1867 cover from Waiuku to Antigua
endorsed "via Panama", tied by obliterator in black and correctly
prepaid for a double weight letter under 1 ounce. Rated "4" (pence)
due to pay upon arrival in ink over erroneous charge of "5" in blue
crayon. Reverse with Waiuku despatch cds (Aug 1), Auckland cds (Aug
6), St. Thomas cds (Sept 10) and Antigua arrival cds (Sept 17).
Both adhesives with minor imperfections but a unique Chalon cover
to this destination and the only recorded Chalon cover to the
Caribbean, Central or South America via Panama known. Cert. RPSL

black-brown, imperforate with close to large margins all round, on
October 1862 cover carried by private French ship from Dunedin to
Port de France (Noumea), New Caledonia tied by obliterator in
black. The stamp with crease and the cover sensibly restored but
the sole recorded Chalon cover to New Caledonia. Unique. Cert. RPSL

covers were mailed to New Caledonia, ten from Auckland and two from

"1" obliterator in black. Carried on the 17th voyage of the
"Ruahine" from Wellington (Nov 8) via Panama, from St. Thomas on
the "Tasmanian" to Southampton with manuscript "3" (pence) charge
deleted and circular "PD" applied in red with 'London / Paid' cds
(Dec 30) in red below and reverse with ""Angleterre par Ouest" and
Verviers cds of arrival (Dec 31). Flap and inside of cover with
some sensible restoration and small faults but very rare - the sole
example of a Chalon cover to Belgium. Cert. RPSL (2006).

examples, right hand stamp small closed tear, used on 1867 cover
from Ross Postal Agency to Ribe, Denmark via Suez tied by barred "C
/ 6" obliterators in black. Manuscript notation at left "Post
Office Ross, West Coast, New Zealand, 24 October 1867" of despatch,
with 'London / Paid' transit cds (Dec 20) in red and manuscript "8"
credit applied in red crayon. Reverse with Hokitika cds (Oct 26),
Christchurch cds (Oct 31), and Ribe arrival cds (January 1, 1868).
A spectacular cover to a very rare destination for Chalon covers,
with just two recorded - both in this collection. Cert. RPSL
(2006). Note 1: The Ross Postal Agency opened on November 1, 1865
in the local gold fields store, Ross was situated some 25 kms.
south of Hokitika. Note 2: This cover was carried by the "Ruahine"
from Wellington to Panama. The 1 s. rate was in effect from Jan 11,

duplexes (Jan 2) in black and by 'London / Paid' cds of transit in
red (March 25). Reverse with Auckland cds (Jan 22) - the cover was
originally franked at 8 d., then delayed for 18 days prior to the
addition of the 1 d. brown at lower left on January 20th - mail
could not be sent unpaid. Red manuscript "3" for 3 d. credit to
Great Britain. Reverse with Viborg arrival cds (March 28). A fine
three colour franking - just two Chalon covers are recorded to
Denmark, both in this collection. Cert. RPSL (2006). Note 1:

on obverse. Reverse with Wellington cds (March 9), Dunedin cds
(March 21) and Avignon cds (May 14). Some ageing but an impressive

postage rates for foreign mail until March 27, 1857. Marked in
London as "1s." due to pay, with "32" groschen charged upon receipt
in red crayon. Reverse with "Otago" despatch cds (May 28), London
cds (Nov 22) in red and Bremen arrival (Nov 24). Edge wear, cracked
file fold and slight soiling but an extremely rare destination for
a Chalon cover. Note: Journey time of 180 days. Probably carried by
the "James Baines" of the Black Ball line leaving Australia on Aug

Mayence, Germany endorsed "via San Francisco", tied by Christchurch
duplex (Aug 3) in black. Correct postage of 8 d. prepaid with "2"
in manuscript being the British credit. 'London / Paid' transit in
red (Oct 2) and French "P-D" below in red; reverse with arrival cds
(Oct 4) in black. The cover was carried from Honolulu to San
Francisco by the steamer "Olympia" which was chartered solely for
this one voyage due to breakdowns affecting the normal Contract
vessels. Despite faults, a rare destination at this date and an
