yellow and 6 d. blue, both perf. 12½, used on 1872 cover from
Thames to Aalesund, Norway all tied by "Thames / A3" in black.
Carried via San Francisco on the Pacific route and correctly rated
at 11 d. for a ½ ounce letter, with British "3d." credit handstamp
in red and "5" skilling charge on arrival in red. Reverse with
Auckland cds (June 11) and Christiania transit cds (Aug 10). The 4
d. yellow with defects where applied off the edge of the cover,
minor creasing however this attractive cover is believed to be the
sole known Chalon head cover to Norway. Cert. RPSL (2010). Note:
November 22, 1871 - Schedule D proclamation at Wellington P.O.
which reduced the rate from the Colony to Norway from 1/2 d. to 11

Chritschurch to Geneva, Switzerland all tied by Perkins Bacon "17"
obliterators in black. Carried via Suez and Marseille with
Marseilles entry marking (May 11) on obverse with red "P.D." above.
Reverse with Dunedin cds (March 16) and Geneva cds (May 12).
Despite imperfections an extremely rare Imperforate Chalon cover to
Switzerland. Cert. RPSL (2006). Note: Carried on P&O "Northam"
from Sydney, "Carnatic" from Galle and the "Massilia" from
Alexandria to Marseille. Journey time 62 days. Provenance:

vertical pair used on 1871 cover from Christchurch to Locarno,
Switzerland tied by barred Christchurch obliterator in black.
Carried at double rate via Suez and travelling through the Canal
and London rather than by Marseilles (the Franco-Prussian War had
just ended) with 'London / Paid' transit cds (May 23) in red and
circular "PD" alongside. Charged "20" centimes due upon arrival in
crayon. A rare and attractive cover. Cert. RPSL (2006). Note:
Carried on P&O "Geelong" from Sydney, the "Poonah" from Galle -
the first journey to go direct through the Canal and on to

single and a horizontal pair used on 1872 from the goldfields of
Waimea to Locarno, Switzerland well tied by "W" handstamps applied
at Hokitika Post Office. Mailed on the Pacific route via San
Francisco, thence via New York with 'London / Paid' cds in red (May
1), circular "PD" and manuscript "3" pence credit to GB. Reverse
with Hokitika despatch cds (March 15), Locarno cds (May 17)
alongside oval "Guimaglio" handstamp in black. The adhesives with
some perf. faults but a stunning and rare cover. Cert. RPSL (2002).

cover prepaid from Russell to New York, with manuscript
"Registered" and listed annotation of rate (1 s. + 1 s. + 1/4 d. =
3/4 d.) in red at upper left. Circular "REGISTERED" handstamp with
index number at left in red, "Auckland" cds in black (March 5),
thence via Suez and London to New York with manuscript "32" cents
in red overstruck by circular "10" cents to pay marking alongside
"NEW YORK AM. PKT." cds (June 4) in black of arrival. Reverse with
Russell despatch cds (March 1) and London cds in red (May 20).
Rare. Note 1: Rate 1 s. + 1 s. + 1/4 d. = 3/4 d. - 1 shilling rate
double weight letter to USA, 1 s. registration fee and 1/4 d. for
foreign letter from GB to USA per ½ ounce. Note 2: Carried on the
P&O "Jeddo" from Sydney, the "Nemesis" from Galle and the

GB in red crayon. No further markings but probably carried by
Cunard line steamer "Malta" leaving Liverpool (Sept 18) and
arriving New York (Sept 27). A fresh and very fine cover. Cert. BPA
(1991). Note: Carried on P&O "Malta" from Sydney, the Candia"
from Galle and the "Delta" from Alexandria to Southampton.
